Old timer died. My buddy got a box with some old tools. Any idea what it is?

That is a double blade hollow auger, used to cut dowel tenons by wheel wrights.

I thought sure this post was going to about Vinke...

Looks like some sort of grinding tool innards- maybe for shocking or shelling IDK. Interesting tho.

Thanks, I like old iron and steel tools, particularly axes, hatchets, adzes and cleavers.

This is 100% guess but it looks like it could be used as a mortiser.

It sets the saw teeth. The set is the bend out away from the main part of the saw plate. It creates the kerf so that the saw doesn't bind in the cut.

The hollow auger appears to just need a good cleaning and sharpening. It even has the depth stop still intact.

Above is correct. About 35 years ago we took our crosscut saws to Missoula to be sharpened and "set". The old codger wasn't quite finished when we returned to pick them up so I got to watch him for a while. After he set the teeth he stood the saw up (two man cross cut) with the teeth up. He then took about a 4 inch sacking needle and laid it in the teeth parallel. He let the needle start to slide down through the teeth and when it fell out of one side, he would start setting the teeth there again. When he was finished the needle would slide through the teeth without falling out the entire length of the saw. Now I tell you what, when we first used those saws those things would CUT almost effortless. I am quite sure that is a lost art but that fine gentleman knew how to properly sharper and set the kerf on a crosscut.

I have nothing clever to put here.
