Looks like some sort of grinding tool innards- maybe for shocking or shelling IDK. Interesting tho.

Above is correct. About 35 years ago we took our crosscut saws to Missoula to be sharpened and "set". The old codger wasn't quite finished when we returned to pick them up so I got to watch him for a while. After he set the teeth he stood the saw up (two man cross cut) with the teeth up. He then took about a 4 inch sacking needle and laid it in the teeth parallel. He let the needle start to slide down through the teeth and when it fell out of one side, he would start setting the teeth there again. When he was finished the needle would slide through the teeth without falling out the entire length of the saw. Now I tell you what, when we first used those saws those things would CUT almost effortless. I am quite sure that is a lost art but that fine gentleman knew how to properly sharper and set the kerf on a crosscut.
