That is what life is all about. I need to get out and get a bird or two myself. I kicked up a lot today in shotgun range I just need to go do it.

we got out the other day in the rain , got soaked but got 2 birds , when you have the afternoon off work you just do it rain or shine.

Lugnut, are they stocked or wild pheasants?

Went down by the shoreline to reset a cage set for coon several tracks in the fresh snowfall.

Pointing Labs or just walk along at heel and pick up what you flush and shoot?

All stocked, Pennsylvania hasn’t had a breeding population of wild pheasants in at least a couple of decades.

Flushing labs. They quarter the cover in shotgun range. When they get a whiff of bird they hone in on it like heat-seeking missiles and flush it. When (if) we knock it down they make the retrieve.

I sure miss pheasant hunting. Pheasant hunting and trapping were the two things I lived for in my youth.

That’s pretty sweet. I’ve seen pointing labs on TV but never in person. I know some plantations that use them to flush the quail in front of the pointers, then retrieve shot birds.

When my old lab would get birdy her tail would start wagging faster. When it looked like a helicopter the bird would flush. I am SO lost without a dog............but it is so nice to not have to find a dog sitter.

Great pictures. I don't get to do things outside much anymore. Seeing these makes me smile and appreciate the beauty of a fall day.

There are labs that point, but flushing labs are different. It's like hunting with a springer spaniel, they don't point, they just stay close and flush the birds. I've not pheasant hunted with a lab but have with a springer. As 160 said, if you can see the dog you can tell if they're on a bird. But if the covers too thick you just need to be ready to shoot at all times as you never know when one will flush.

It must be a blast hunting ovah a dog.

Nevah had the opportunity....nobody I know has a dog like that.
