Anybody have any experience in taking them out?Ours needs to come out so I can get a 8" insulated flex liner down the chimney for our woodstove. Local contractor said he wouldn't be able to get to it till next spring🤔.

I'm going to assume the liner is too big to just slide down the old flue?

Our clay liner has a inside measurement of 7", the insulated 6" liner has a outside measurement of 71/4" .So the liners have to come out one way or another,never done it before.

How about a new 5" liner rather than 6?
Also titanium-stainless liners are an option.
Zoning or fire marshal may provide info.

I removed a set once. It involved a
hook, rope, blood, and whining.
Maybe try tool rental places for proper tool.

I'm going to look into the 5" today,what information I had said 6" was minimum but I see they sell 5"-5.5" liners so Ill look into it,titanium stainless liners I'm not familiar with

Mine is 6", into 8x12 clay (7x11 inside). It was not a straight run.
Non-insulated and was a tight fit through the curves.

Check codes and talk to the fire marshal rather than opinions
from people who have no experience.

I've built many brick and block chimneys with clay flues, never removed flues though. I think you would risk damaging the chimney even if you could get them all out. I would look into a smaller diameter liner as suggested above.

Get some heavy duty snap button sweep rods for a drill and tape(gorilla tape) or clamp a 4 pound hammer to the bottom rod, or you can buy tile breakers too. The 4 lb works really well. We tear a lot of tiles out like this.
Let me know if you have any questions.
You need the tiles removed, don't down size the liner.
Stand on the top and spin from the bottom and pull your way up. You'll need a guy down low to clean out and communicate when to stop. Take your time, don't get any clogs. You'll also need a spotlight and a good mask. It's dusty.

After you tear out, use a long piece of rebar and peck the boogers out from the inside of the chimney so the insulation doesn't tear on the descend. Don't forget to buy a pull cone.

I would try to get a smaller liner. Removing the flue liners will also weaken the chimney,
especially if the liners aren't straight to start with. Been building and ripping down chimneys
for 50 years.

unless it is a Architectural statement, and i was keeping the home, I would remove the chimney.
I am a sucker for old brick for other use though

Anybody have any experience with a 5.5" liner?We've got a 15' chimney,not sure what kind of a draw we'd get shrinking the diameter of the liner.

Maybe a better draw?
6” did better that 8 on my house ( 2 story)

The way I looked at it was that there was not 6 inches of opening in the stove for air to flow

Quadra-Fire recommends a 6" chimney at a certain length for optimum draft for their stoves. I'm not sure why that is. You might look up the manufacturer's specs on your stove if applicable.

The only stack I saw that wouldn't draw had a pane of glass
in the flew. Saw many that drew too good. I have some
LARGE liners for sale lol.

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but would any of you all know about going from an 8" stove to a 6" flue? I know you can go the other way, but I may have a chance on a good stove that has an 8" opening, but my chimney is 6" stainless. Happy Birthday as well Buck!
