Underfur near 3/4 inch now in the neck.

Early December is what I always figure for my neck of the woods. That pelt looks nice though Boco.

They may be starting to prime up in Northern Canada (James Bay Frontier) but not even close in high elevation Wyoming and Montana. Very FLAT behind the neck now, you're spoiled with far northern fur. I just killed one at over 10,000' altitude on Saturday Oct. 28th and it was nowhere near ready as a fur beaver. Now any summer skin will sell as a hatter and for poundage, but that market may fall apart before most existing skins can be marketed this year. The beaver you posted looks like a good longhair skin but will have much more dense underfur in another three months. Like FHA's old grade they called first part second, their top grade for years.

Boco lives in southern Canada. They are coming on prime here.

Northern Canada would be east and north of me.

Right now the underfur wont get any more dense just longer.
Here in the north the underfur will get to a maximum of 1 inch in depth, that is in March..,3/4 and over grades hvy as the underfur gets longer you can feel more resistance.Under 3/4 it will feel less resistance and grades semi.Summer underfur in the neck area is almost non existand and late sept ,early oct around 1/2 inch in length
Right now here at the end of oct the underfur in the neck on most are right around 3/4 inch depth.

Hard water here now, but not good enough to walk on…..almost. Ventured out to check a lodge I found, but couldn’t get close. If it stays cooler and no snow, might be able to actually see some bubbles.

Use an aluminum ladder if you are on iffy ice.It will spread your weight over the runs where ice is thinner, and if you breal thru you can climb up the ladder.

About 200 miles north of the arctic watershed here, and in a recognized area-(Northern Ontario/Northern Quebec) for some of the best Beaver genetics.
But whatever.
Here is one I trapped 4 days ago, boarding it later.
Underfur behind the neck 3/4 inch.

Western beaver is a different animal when it comes to growing fur.
I always do good on grades and sales with the late fall beaver.

The ole double whammy. I have had beaver that looked good on the leather side, not so good on the fur side. And the opposite.

That is a great looking beaver. Never see that in Nebraska. They have hair and fleas.

Up here, west of northern Canada, the hides are a bit more prime on the leather side. smile
