Thought I would share these pics of a natural dug coyote dirt hole....Quite a difference from the wide & flashy dirt holes shown in some method books.

This looks more like a narrow step down set, but it's also how I go about making my current dirt hole sets as well.

But strangely, ive had better luck with the flashier dirtholes vs more of the trench type sets that mimic the natural holes. I just wonder if they think the more "natural dug" holes indicates the food is gone as generally there isnt a hole over food like if another predator has buried food. Its been a while since I read it but Charlie wrote about this a bit in the Land Sets and Techniquea. book

Very interesting SniperBBB, I've just switched over to these more natural narrow type dirtholes & have been catching pretty well so far, reasoning that being natural might be more enticing to the wary older dogs... But it's way to early to say they're working better over time than the flashy style dirtholes.

Your idea that the coyotes might think the reward is long gone may be dead on.

I have Charlie's book, and will check out his take on this variation.

Thanks for the input!

A coyotes nose will tell him what's down that hole, no thinking needed

Piles of chaff are golden especially if they are at an end where there is already and established trail. Those and any place a round bale has sat for months and just got moved.
