My dad had a bunch of German coins that he found in some Nickolodeans he once owned. Some felt like aluminum.

The price paid from a buyer is based on condition. If they have been cleaned, they will be graded as damaged and the price falls bigly.

Thank you for sharing, jbyrd63. They're people on here that enjoy and appreciate foreign coins. Always fun to see what people can come up with.

I do know Germany uses the euro now. So I don't believe you could spend that money if you wanted to.

Post WWII, Huess was the first president of West Germany. But, yes, probably came home with a GI just cold war not WWII.

If I had to take a guess, chairforce as they have bases in Great Britian, Italy and Germany and would be more likely to visit all four in a tour than us ground pounders in the Army. But army guys did get leave to travel so who knows.

Oh, and we did use local currency. While our dollars can be spent anywhere it was frowned upon to use them off post by our brass. Something about exchange rates and keeping the supply of dollars in our on post vendors. We would swing by the post bank on Friday to do an exchange before hitting the bars on the weekend.

I find a lot of foreign coins metal detecting. Most of the newer ones are made of a pot metal, zinc, iron ect. I do come across the older canadian bank tokens, like a large cent copper quite a bit. Some spanish half realles and other odds and ends. I just found this not long ago and haven't even done any research on it yet. About quarter size, silver 1873. A lot of our early currency was from all over the world. [Linked Image]
