There was a live auction Saturday night with online bidding for bred ewes. I ended up buying 5 of them and I think dad will take 1 or 2 and I’ll keep the others. Anyway thought I’d share a pic, we are trying to improve our genetics and build up our registered herd

Yes sir that’s the sale, 4 of the 5 came from a farm about 2 1/2 hours away from me. The ewes took the long route to my house. You raise katahdins?

New ewes or used ewes ? Used ewes are usually cheaper.

My son drew some blood from our 8 brood yews yesterday...and ran it over to the University for pregnancy testing. Just to take the guess work out of it.

We started raising them 4 years ago and we too like them. Just started buying a few registered ewes this summer

You have commercial registered or both?

I’ve never done that but would like to take the guesswork out, these ewes have all been ultra sound veeified

The ewe in the middle is bred to a salmon run ram

We tried the ultrasound route before...not that accurate as a blood test.

My son said ... Salmon Run Katahdins are solid and some of the best in the country.

Good luck

Copy on blood test being more accurate, I believe you. Weve not done either but would sure like to not have to wait 5 months to find out

I would think your son would know, I appreciate it. I’ll do my best to post pics when I start lambing this year

My son runs a marking harness...to see whos marked and who's not. Then writes the dates down...and then he has an idea when the party starts

I did that last year with success, this year for some reason the markers I got weren’t marking very good, plan to try again next year

We have registered Katahdins. We added 10 ewe lambs from Steve Bull in Iowa this summer. It is great not having to get them sheared every year. The different colors make it more interesting.

The original plan when we bought the farm was to get cattle, but with the limited acres of pasture I wasn’t gonna be able to run enough to justify the work

I agree on the not sheering, when I was a kid we raised suffolks, I like the hair better. I also agree the different colors add to the appeal. The wife, kids and I all like seeing the different colors.

I’ll be honest I don’t know that name but I will see if I can find him
