Well she has made her first voyage out to the trapline this past week. Boy you talk about a different experience for the both of us! She is a ball of energy to say the least! Since she is still a puppy and new to this I figured the leash was a good thing to have her on. I took her off of it a couple of times, this was mainly when we were in the river. When we walked around a couple of fields she was on the leash and pretty much pulled me along behind. I want to invest in a collar for her just in case she would wander off. She is learning to come when I call her but she is still young so not always wanting to listen. So what collar are you guys running on yours?

I have been considering giving one of them tracking chips you can buy nowadays a try around the farm.
It would be interesting to see what the dog does all day.
Guessing you need cell. but have not looked into it

I would prefer satellite, kinda like a GPS tracker. I have property in the u.p. and planning on first ever out of state trip for next year. Where I will be at don't always have good cell reception and really don't want to take a chance, kinda starting to enjoy this dog. I've never really been a pet person so to speak.

We’ve got the dogtra pathfinder 2 on our two German shepherds. Works great when out on the trap line or hunting. Constant GPS tracking, and the ability to beep or shock if necessary. It also can be used like an electric fence at home that they’re not allowed to leave. No need to bury a wire, you just mark on your phone where you want the boundaries.

Dogtra fan here too. It does use a cell phone but you don't need service. You can download the maps (for free) at home of where you hunt and then use it entirely offline with no service. If you end up in an area somehow where you don't have the map downloaded and don't have cell service, it still works to locate the dog, just without the terrain details of the maps.

I run Garmin Alpha. It has track and train on the same collar.

Been using Garmin for a long time and really like them. Great service as well.

Dogtra is what I use for my three Mtn. Feists. The only thing I would warn against is using the shock to teach a dog to come. It's a great training tool but the dog needs to know and fully comprehend the commands before using electrical correction. Trying to teach a dog commands with shocks can and most likely will scare it and you will have a tough road ahead if they misinterpret a command as a warning. I like to tone them three times before correction, I started in the yard after they followed the commands in the house. With each tone I'd count. Our command is here so I say, " HERE"... "one",tone... "two",tone... "three",tone..." zap! Then when they run to you, give much praise and scratches. That way, now if they don't listen with the collar off I can count and when I say ONE they come running. Also if we are hunting they get 3 tones before correction, and usually one tone turns them around so no need for yelling while hunting or trapping.

wouldnt turn my coyote hounds loose without a garmin on - too easy to track and train a dog these days. Days of laying a coat out and hoping they show back up or waiting for someone to read a phone number on a collar are over. We have lost receptions when a dog gets smoked on a road or a collar failed internally or battery died. Generally with running dogs though, many times they come in with another dog.

Can't go wrong with the Garmin Alpha. I tried other brands because of the cost and ended up just biting the bullet. Would have saved me some money if I would have gone with the Alpha from the beginning

never yet seen a big game houndsmen run anything other than garmin these days.....there is a reason for it - customer service still exists as well at garmin
