A leaning pole baited with Beaver. In all honesty, Marten have very small bones in their feet and toes and a #0 would be even better. Check out the "Wilderness Forums" for some "How to" tips from the AK gents.

Marten aren't that fussy. Venison scraps will work or fish. Like I said, a #1 LS is certainly plenty of trap for Marten. You will want to keep them suspended off the ground to prevent damage. Check out the Wilderness forums. Those fine gents have it down to a science. The archives have a TON of good info and pictures as well.

OP, do yourself a favour and find some of the approved 120 body grip traps. In addition to being legal, you will have a much easier time constructing sets with them, and they will stay in working order much better than footholds, which get snowed in and frozen up, and are more likely to catch non-targets.
As far as bait, if you don't have beaver, many other things will work, especially duck or grouse scraps. Scatter the feather around the set; that really gets the marten excited/

You are the one responsible for the set, no one else. And we were all rookies at some point too so don't take it to hard.

Somebody told me you are on their radar too JP. Yup! I’m a licensed taxidermist, licensed fur buyer, licensed wild animal parts dealer, CWD depot for the Province, commercial fishermen, and that goof tells people I’m on the radar
