He really only has one “clear” spot to step.

Wanna Be, on the first picture, I can’t make out the location of your trap and the bait hole. Is the trap on the right side of the trench about the center of the trench? Also, is the bait hole on the right side of the trench near the top of the trench?

Stepdown dirtholes or trench sets are self guided. They commit, they are caught. I like them deep, with the hole in the front, down at the bottom. I try to drill the bait hole almost parallel to the surface. They have to step down to see in the hole. Rain is a problem, but that's something I rarely see this time of year. Want the trap at least 6 inches below surface.

Many trappers do not know how to properly guide an animal, especially a coyote.
One of the most common mistakes, I saw while giving instructions

All good answers. I leave a small depression on the pan and make a fake track in that depression sometimes.

If I get misses I figure it could be a smaller coyote or some squirrely female. If I want that one I usually try a staked hide set. I stake is real good so they cannot pull the stake and run off with it but they can play with it.

Use something down the hole they want to eat so they work for it and make a deep hole. Using 2 or 3 scents at a hole helps to keep them interested also.

If other trap around you use something different than them. Same with bait. If others are using horse - use beaver or cat or p-dog, ect create interest.

Just passin through

Put a trap on each side. Have them on drags. That's a good set. Mine looks the same. Just 2 traps on drags

The drags are a good idea.

Good advice above. Bedding your trap offset to the hole a few inches will increase your catch percentage. Good luck

I’ve caught 14 coyotes and five coon in the last 8 days , ten of those coyotes were caught in double dirt holes . 2 more on a pipe set, I believe the pipe makes them move they’re feet too .
