Please contact me at 815-994-6332 if you saw the live feed of the beaver sale at FHA in May. I just have a couple questions. I can pass on a couple helpful skinning tips for every caller who viewed it. No private messages please. Thanks.

I had heard a story about a super big black beaver that went for $600. Just wondering if it really happened. Curious what state produced it, etc. And Boco could give me skinning tips rather than the other way around.

Thanks for the tip IT58! Hopefully I’ll try it out later today.
I looked on YouTube a while back when people were calling the $775 beaver bull crap, saying the top beaver was $64USD. It was live streamed, but the only videos I found were from the first day starting with wolf. Beaver started Saturday morning. It was a little auction with no lot number on its own before the real auction with lot numbers started. Weird that a $1000CA beaver isn’t posted to their channel.

I wondered why he had such a weird name, chalked it up to a celebrity thing calling their kids strange names…Audio, Birdie, Cricket, Blanket, Doorknob…etc.
Now it makes sense

I still haven’t heard from anyone that saw a black beaver auctioned off. I’m sure I saw it mentioned somewhere on TrapperMan. Couple folks really interested in hearing from someone who watched it or was actually at the sale.

At the May 2023 FHA there was a really BIG beaver that sold for $775.00. It measured 92”. It is not shown in the online sold catalog, so I assume it was on an addendum page.

It was bought by Gary Schroeder of Moscow Hide & Fur. I don’t know who the other bidder(s) were but I can think of several other craft buyers at FHA that would have been interested in such an item. More of a novelty item that anything else. Similar to when they have a white otter in the auction.

I have seen this 92” beaver pelt. It does exist!!

As far as the FHA published sale report, the high beaver is listed at $64.00. That price was paid for a string of 32 skins. 2X-3X #1 blacks. Which is what the fur trade market was for beaver at that time.

FHA does NOT publish the price paid for unique items - such as a 92” beaver. The price paid for unique items is NOT a true indication of the fur market and in many cases gives fur harvesters false hope on future prices. Which is the way it should be.

I’m sure there will be at least one person on Tman that will disagree with me. So be it. I know what I know is true.

Being from Texas, I know very little about fur prices as you couldn't give our hides away

The explanation by wissmiss makes total sense to me though

Is that 92 square inches? 92" circumference? Or ?

Wow, what a tank. I wonder what a carcass beaver like that would weigh?

Measured length + width.
I honestly only recall the one before the auction. During the live stream, there was all kinds of stuff going on outside of camera view but sounds like they’re setting up.
Once fur is dropped off at a FHA depot, the trappers license/account is documented on the receipt. In Canada, theyd take care of any required permits. I’d assume the permits would be obtained on the US side to ship the furs to their main warehouse in Ontario. Would that not cover their butts regarding the Lacey Act?

On a side note,
In Canada the federal permit stuff is crazy, even for the enforcement fellas. A CO told me that they were giving the wrong permits for polar bear hides going from Nunavut to a business in Churchill….lol. He has to call every time because it’ll change or they’ll want a different permit filled out. He told me to just call him if I have to ship anything out of province/country, and obviously not to take advice off the internet…lol

FH has a depot at Cambridge, Wisconsin. Fur from the lower 48 is collected there and they do the paperwork to ship the fur to North Bay.

It would be a disaster if an individual US trapper tried to ship his pelts directly to North Bay.

Who caught the giant beaver and where was it caught?

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.
