Common as mosquitos around here. They can make quick work of a suet cake in January smile

Red headed pillated woodypecker! I think it's on the endangered species list.

Really? They are everywhere here. I call them "Goofy" when they hang upside down on the suet feeders.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Have a pair here every winter on the suet. Cool birds.

As an American I'm growing tired of our ancestors being compared to the migrants of today.

The redheaded woodpecker is , but not the pileated woodpecker.
I get them and the flicker mixed up.
I think they're one and the same.

They are a cool bird, big for a woodpecker.
Used to see lots in central Ontario when I was a kid. They would drill big elongated holes in the sides of big white pine.Nests I suppose.
Very rare bird here in the north although I have seen a couple over the years.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

They’re all common here. I actually hate hearing them all day.

We had one of those jaspers visiting us every year. He'd bang on our spouting in mating season.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

I've had a pair in the woods behind my place for years. I love the calls they make, sounds like something out of tropical forest rather than northern hardwoods.

Eh...wot?

Girdled two of my best apple trees last year. You can have them.

They bad about getting my heart going during turkey season. Sometimes we’ll sit and call and maybe catch a snooze. You open your eyes and see that red and think it’s a gobbler coming and it’s one of those dang woodpeckers about 3ft off the deck.
Didn’t realize they were in the PNW until I found a tree they’d made a hotel out of.

Given the stories I’ve heard I’m pretty sure reason they are called wood hens is certain locales laugh
