I've had a pair in the woods behind my place for years. I love the calls they make, sounds like something out of tropical forest rather than northern hardwoods. I Love hearingand seeing them too Here's some pics of the pair I mentioned. They are making a sap well in one of my beech trees. Apparently they make them in spring and check them regularly for the insects they attract. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/11/full-272-194674-pileated.jpg)

jalstat They like old timber there like along the river or out in the islands. I was 60 mile south of the quad cities and there were several pair working the area along the river swamp areas then.

Look huge stumbling thru the woods, and their call sounds just like a squirrel.

Red headed pillated woodypecker! I think it's on the endangered species list. The redheaded woodpecker is , but not the pileated woodpecker. I get them and the flicker mixed up. I think they're one and the same. Three separate birds.
