Beaver sound good, rats not terrible.

I have nothing clever to put here.

$45 tops for northern beaver (put up) and $40 for mid-western goods. Sounds like about the same prices realized at the last FHA sale.
The notion that the beaver market may be over-stated appears to not have merit.

Of course I assume that GWF pays top price irregardless of the grades like happened last spring.

And without the commission added....

I mean subtracted...

Top will be higher than that at the auction.

So how many beaver will reach the $45 mark. How many rats at $5? You can advertise a high price all you what but when it comes time to grade and pay you can bet very few will be at that level. Hype to get fur in the door or on the truck.

A lot can happen to the market by time the auction happens.

What the Beav says is true, but somebody with fur smarts like Groenwold isn’t likely to make a mistake on what their opening prices are. If anything they usually error on the conservative side.

Top price isn't as important as price breakdown for each size.

Actually, if I remember right, the game the Beav has mentioned is pay and advertise high early, get everybody trapping, then when trappers show up to sell there is a magic price drop due to something.

I'm just glad we are talking about a decent beaver market, regardless if it's GFW or FHA

Certainly the fur markets are struggling and have been struggling for years with no relief in sight. Less and less country buyers mean reduced options for trappers to sell fur. Not everyone can finish their fur and have the option of shipping to auction. Our industry needs country buyers to survive long term.

Hats off and credit given to anyone buying fur in the country in this uncertain market. Lots of overhead to pay employees, run walk in freezers, fuel and vehicle expense to run road routes with no guarantee of any positive return. Most if not all country buyers including Groenwold are just trying to take care of their regular customers and survive until the markets recover. I think most would be happy to recover their fixed costs let alone make a profit. Be glad they are still running routes and giving the trappers another option to sell fur. Most buyers have freezers full of fur and it takes some grit to buy more fur when you can't sell what you already have. Better fur prices would help everyone, from trappers to supply dealers to fur buyers to auction houses.

GFW did the exact opposite last year. Told all to trap beaver...prices went up.....

Gibb mentioned in the Canadian forum that 5 bucks would be prime, prime eastern rats. My rats wouldn’t be that great, and the northern Ontario & Quebec trappers over stretch according to the bible…lol

If the tops are about the same as last year for good put up of the best then we also can factor in what averages will be as well, based on sales from last year. It seems to me that when a slow market is improving it is doing so on the upper end and we are not seeing much improvement in what many of us would call typical or average pelts.

Last year in essence there was no grading or section for beaver. It was all about size.
Be interesting to see how it goes this time around.
