In my shop I have a height shortage.I want to try doing a diagonal skinning machine setup. By that I mean having a skinning grambel attached to the ceiling then have my winch mounted to the wall close to the floor. Wondering if anyone has used this setup and any advise you have.

Bob, I am sure it can be done. Just make sure you have good strong swivels Top & Bottom so you can rotate while skinning.

Mine is horizontal. Works well in a limited height scenario. One plus, if you cut a vein, the blood doesn't run down on the hide.

I'd run it just the opposite if your set on that style. Put the winch up in the corner and the base diagonal off the floor.

How much ceiling height are you dealing with? Is it somewhere you could get 9' if you frame around it to get it a little higher?

A&J skinning machines, the guys who took over production of my skinning machines still offer the roller type machines that I used to make. They are perfect for lower ceilings...

Jamie, I have 90” from the floor to the winch, is that enough room for the roller setup?

I did the box frame like ADC's photo shows. It was in my garage and was framed up between the trusses to get the needed height for the winch.

Do you have a work bench? If so mount the winch on one end and on the other end bolt down something where you can fastened the hind legs. Then on the winch cable hook up a slip noose. Open your coon or what ever your skinning. Slip the noose around the tail and skirt fur. Tighten the noose and pull the hide off.
I would block up the winch so It's higher then the work surface. That way you can turn the carcass when your doing any knife work.

Free standing h orizontal for me. Like it better than vertical. I tried beavs idea with noose on coyotes last year worked good

It may work if you lower the roller but if you can't get more height I believe I'd go horizontal or angled like you asked about. This is the way I used to build the horizontal ones but you can build the brackets to hold them at an angle too. I have built a couple that way for guys who skin in a basement. I don't have a picture of those.

Your better off pulling the hide off the carcass rather then pulling the carcass out of the hide. By pulling the hide off the carcass you can re potions your slip nose if your running out of bench or table length.

You'd need about 12' or so.... but you could put a roller on the end opposite of the winch and then you could get by with 8-9' - for coyotes.
