I didn’t want to derail another GW thread, so contributing this. First of all, I will say they have a job to do, there will be good and bad encounters, etc. Sometimes no encounter, but they know that you know, they are present, watching you, and just appear to want to intimidate you.
Now, Let’s start with the bigger picture, which is the 4th Amendment’s inclusion of open fields, which simply means your privacy and need for search warrant doesn’t extend beyond your private dwelling’s exterior walls. In other words, a game warden can snoop around your property, even if you have your property posted. It appears now, a few states(may we hope the list grows), have amended thier state constitution to offer more privacy, and GWs can’t snoop, (in your woods) without a warrant. Same goes for trail camera placement. I haven’t found that trail cameras placed on private property, by GWs are protected. Some Joe Blow trespassed and placed it, right? Now your FOIA rights. Everyone has the right to request a GW’s body cam footage. It may be enlightening to see what a GW does, or doesn’t know. I have also had my trail cameras capture a GW snooping around my property, requested the footage, and guess what, they either didnt have the camera on (Not what I read, as compliance with the state’s body cam usage requirements, which is also available upon request), or the state doesn’t comply with your rights, and provide all footage, (not just that involving other human interaction)

You didn't get body camera footage because the cameras don't run continuously. They're supposed to be turned on at all citizen encounters. Try FOIA'ing that request and you will get the vidoes you request..or you should. You will in Georgia. Keep it for 3 years..then delete...if not court case related.

Body camera footage is uploaded to Cloud storage mostly weekly or monthly by officers/agencies. Can you imagine the storage space needed for all shift long continual videos...??? I'm not sure that is even possible.

We had two GW's in Clay County. The experienced one was a pretty good guy. The new one was not worth a pile of Doo Doo!! He is no longer a field officer but more of a secretary. About 8 years ago I called him over 10 times in 12 days because a Bear was getting into my Barn and tearing up my locked Sweet Feed Grain for the Horses. It was done mostly at night but it started getting Braver and Braver by the day. At night our Horses were in their stalls and they felt trapped with the Bear breaking in and knew sooner or later one of them would hurt itself. Then one afternoon the Bear came across the Pasture headed to the Barn and our Horses were stampeding across the Pasture. I knew one of them would go through the wire and get hurt so my wife went out to try to calm them down. I called the worthless GW and demanded he get out here. He told me he was leaving for Vacation and I would have to wait until he got back next week. I replied just wait one minute and put the phone down walked out onto my deck with my 7 mag and shot and killed it. Then I walked back to the phone and told him not to worry problem solved. He and a sheriff Officer were there in 23 minutes from when I hung up. The Magistrate threw it out of court and I filed a Civil Suit against the WV DNR!! That is how I got him out of the field.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

I understand your point Swamp Wolf however I'd like to point out the immensity of storage space makes that argument a moot point. Heck a few years ago if someone had a single terabyte of storage they would need an entire server rack, today the basic video game systems come with a terabyte on them. Storage or info is not the issue. We have continuous video footage of the warehouse from twenty plus cameras that watch every foot of space inside and out on the property I work and can pull footage from two years ago. Our trucks can pull footage for every second 24/7/365 for a year for a fleet of 30 trucks and company wide the fleet is multiple thousand trucks.

I believe the issue is that we live in a litigious society and if an officer was to talk poorly about a person they would open the department up to a lawsuit and legal fees. In my opinion it's not about space as much as it is about protecting the governments funds.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it's just how I see it

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

The footage must be able to be indexed by officer, date, time, etc. For Georgia DNR, that is only 300 officers amd it is contracted out to an outside source to handle. The cost for that storage is in the tens of thousands annually. Maybe the high quality footage with sound requires more..I'm not sure.

in WI unless it is a active court case/charges filed , a homicide or a child sexual assault audio video only need be kept 120 days.

homicide is forever , child sexual assault till the youngest victim is 46 as they have till they are 45 to file charges.

technology changes much faster than the legislature adjusts for it.

also the storage isn't just a hard drive for department archives , it has to meet criteria , currently the easiest way to do that is use the service of the body cam manufacturer support. which also gives you the editing ability to blur faces and edit time periods.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
