Almost every time I held highI'd shoot air

so I now shoot at the Deer...high if it's out there...but no higher than the spine.

At what kind of yardage are you shooting deer? I find it interesting that many use a .22 cal. Legally here we can't.

You should go over to the firearms section on Rokslide and read the thread ".223 for Deer,Elk,Bear, and Moose". Over 5k responses on that thread and plenty of kill pictures and field necropsies done to show how effective the 77gr Sierra TMK and the Hornady 73 ELDM bullets are out of .223, .224 Valkyrie, 22-250 and 220 Swifts. It'll stir up a hornets nest with the crowd that thinks you need a 300 WinMag to kill an 80 pound deer. Proven fact that lighter recoiling rifles are easier to shoot more accurately.

I disagee, you can wound just as easily shooting at the small red spot.Lots of non lethal possibilities there.

Hmm, we have a disagreement then. Shall we resort to personal attacks? lol

You've undoubtedly killed more deer than I have. I don't know what gun you're using or the conditions you're hunting in.

I myself would not use a brain shot. I usually aim for the near or off shoulder, angling the bullet through the heart/lung cavity. Not always DRT, but DRQ (dead right quick).

I've used a .300 Win Mag--mainly because I was hunting in a land of big brown bears.

Thanks for the replies. Most of my hunting is done in fields or cow pasture so 300 yard + shots are not uncommon. Our regulations say the minimum cal is .23. I've shot a dozen or so deer with a 243 which works pretty slick. Since I've moved from central to north west alberta I've pretty much retired the .243 and now carry mainly a 338 in the event a elk shows itself.

I like plain soft points or bonded soft points for deer. They kill just fine. Never cared much for plastic tipped bullets.

If I could only pick one bullet in any caliber, it would be a Nosler Partition.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

You have to remember that 1 out of 3 Democratic Voters is just as dumb as the other two.

The Federal Blue box .243 soft points kill deer dead; and in my 3 .243's shoot tight groups

Bonded bullets are Amazing

Here is a conundrum to ponder.

My rifle has the best groups using a 150 grain 30cal partition at 3170 Ft/sec. Most of my shots are under 100 yards unless i see one at the clear cuts of the powerline then it can be 300 + ....... If you choose a pullet that is tough enough to stay together at those speeds close in, its probably going to pencil at the longer range. But if you pick one that expands at the slower speeds out at distance it will come apart close in. Its not because the bullets are bad. its because they are made for a purpose. I found a happy medium and use the Nosler partition and it works close in and further out quite well. I admit that using a 30-06 in this scenario is probably too much gun for what I do and would probably be better saved with a 243. But I like it.
It is all too easy to blame the bullet for poor shot choice, trying to make the bullet do something that is was not made for.

I've never had a problem with barnes near or far. Wish I knew how to post pics lol. When I say far I'm talking 600-700 yards on elk. Near is maybe 75 yards. Unsure of my mv out of my 257 wby or 338 wm but I load close to max.

Those Partitions sure keep a lot of guess work out of the equation. I have enough of them on hand to last me fro the rest of my days and then some for that very reason. There is nothing is this part of the woods that I can't get home with a 150 Partition out of a 30-06 as dinosaurs are extinct and latest footage shows that bigfoot is under 500 pounds.

Sierra Game King bullets have been good to me for over 30 years. I shoot a 280 Remington and use the 150 grain. Shot moose, elk, mule deer, antelope, whitetail deer and black bear with it. Wife shoots a 270 with the 140 grain bullet and has shot the same except moose. Son shoots a 25-06 with the 117 grain bullet and has shot black bear and whitetail with it.

With Minnesota expected to move to non-lead bullets in the next few years, I’m starting to look at Barnes or Nosler copper bullets.

Well zapped my elk. Didn't range it but gonna figure 350 yards thru the front shoulders with a 338 tsx 225. Man I like those barnes. Eat right up to the hole. I recovered this one on the off side about a inch from poking thru the hide. Some along the bullets travels it lost a petal but it was a dead elk regardless.

What's a "hunting" bullet? There are three types of bullets I know of. Cup and core, partition, and bonded. All are not equal. People post the brand and grain weight they are shooting, but they all fall under one of the three types.
