for me this is the most forgiving place to get a CNS hit where if I miss my mark a little there are a lot of arteries and organs near by.

For me That red spot is Two inches straight back....SAME HIGHT just in line with the leg Top of scapula Still a Spinal Fold the Deer straight down.

If you are aiming for that little red spot might as well go for the head shot.Same thing.

Not even close to being the same. My “red” spot is back a couple of inches, but close enough.

I like horns and I like taxidermy. I wouldn't shoot that little red dot but then again I wouldn't shoot that deer either.

I like horns too…that’s why I’m shooting that little red dot. It’s going straight down with a rifle. Now with a bow it’s a completely different ball game.

A little to far forward for me. Ruin the cape there.

I did a little sperimentin a while back with different bullets. One was to load the Sierra pro hunter round nose that I use in the 30-30 and cork a couple of 06's with them. At just north of 3000 ft/sec the expansion is violent. I shot at a pack of wet paper and a hand grenade would have had similar results I would think. No way would I use that bullet, case combination on something that I would want to eat. But it sure would stop a two legged varmint in short order. But that 150 grain pill was pushed at probably 800 ft/sec above its design envelope. For the 30-30 it is an excellent choice though I found.

I like to shoot where the red dot is. I'm 77 now with a bad leg and to much belly. Never want a shot deer to get out of my sight The red dot location is DRT.

Shot lots of bear in the head, brain shot-drop like a sac of potatoes.
Best most reliable shot is heart-lung.No big deal trailing 50 or even 100 yards. No wrecked meat either.

I like shooting them through the ribcage. Pop the lungs. Shoulders are good meat. I’ve been smoking them and pulling them , bbq sandwiches the whole family loves. Or, debone and grind.

I understand the deer will drop if shot in the high shoulder, head, spinal column. This is nice and convenient if you need or want that. And a lung shot deer will run until he dies, but will leave plenty of blood to recover the animal quickly. This is just my opinion, and from my experiences. However, if you smoked a venison shoulder properly, you might not shoot the next one thru the shoulder smile

The difference between shooting at the red spot and shooting for the brain: You can miss the red spot by a little bit and still kill the animal.

All of the small number of deer I have taken have been with Sierra 63gr SMPs out of a 22-250. I have no complaints except if I ever do have to track a deer that it could be a pain due to the possible lack of blood trails.

At what kind of yardage are you shooting deer? I find it interesting that many use a .22 cal. Legally here we can't.

I disagee, you can wound just as easily shooting at the small red spot.Lots of non lethal possibilities there.

Not to answer for Norwestalta but I’ve shot them over 300 yards with a 22-250 and 220 swift.

Farthest the I have taken a deer has probably been under 125 yards (114 meters) and certainly under 150 yards (137 meters). I have heard of people taking significantly longer shots and have confidence in the 22-250 out to a longer range. I did take a shot at a deer at what I guess was around 200 yards (182 meters). Since it was walking perpendicular to me my bird hunter instincts kicked in so I decided to lead it. Forgetting I was shooting a 22-250 with a very short flight time and is sighted to be dead on at that range. Needless to say I put the round in the space just in front of the deer.

As for the ballistic potential of the Sierra 63gr SMP on broadside shots I have had full penetration. I have had some high quartering shots when I had some elevation that resulted in the deer just dropping due damage to the spinal cord. This past season I put a round into a doe's shoulder breaking it. She ran only a little ways and died quickly. None of my deer have required tracking and I would say none have run more than 50 yards (45 meters) from where I shot them.
