Anybody else on here have one? What are you loading it with? Got one that I’m going to start working up some loads for and I’m looking a good starting point. I’ve got 200gr Barnes TSX and some 200gr accubonds on hand.

300 win mag shoots the same weight of bullet to similar velocities. 4831 works real nice in mine

I had one serval years ago i don't remember the load I used do remember i used 7828 powder and . I used Barnes bullets. I had a machinist friend put a boat tail on the Barnes bullet I think I have some of the brass left. I built a 7mm STW that I still use as my deer/elk rifle.

Neither had I so I looked it up. Looks like a vicious round that would be very uncomfortable to shoot. They are.

I saw this post early this morning and waited until lunch to reply, because my love affair with the 8mm Rem. Mag is a long one. I will preface this with the 8mm Mag is a good gun, however there are a lot better and on the flip side there are a lot worse out there as well.
My dad purchased a new model 700 BDL 8mm Rem mag. back in 1977/78 when it was first released. On Thanksgiving morning 1978, I had the privilege of going buck hunting with dad. I had just turned 9 years old. We were running late getting to the woods as yours truly was slow moving that morning and boy was dad mad. We drove in closer to our spot to save time to try to get there at legal shooting light. We stopped at our second gate as I got out to swing the gate open, I heard dads truck door open and he whispered "get down and be quiet" he had spotted a buck after a doe and they were coming through the field directly to us. Dad let them come as he took a rest off a fence post. It was a quartering to shot and when the gun cracked the fire looked like it flew 10 feet out the barrel and the buck did a complete back flip at impact. I was so impressed with the pure power of the cartridge. It was a small basket 8 pt. but at the time it was a monster to me and I still have the mount of dads buck on the wall. I never was a big guy and had shot dads 8mm from a bench several times through the years it was an eye teeth jarring experience compared to the 243 that I was using. In 1988 it was my senior year in high school and for my 18th birthday my dad wanted to buy me a deer rifle as his dad had done for him for his 18th birthday in 1968. I read and read, but could not really settled on what I wanted. That same fall my dad came across a good buy on a 7mm Rem mag and I think he thought that I would like it, but I just never took a liking to it. On the other hand dad fell in love with the 7mm so the weekend before season buck season opened we were shooting our rifles and dad asked me if I wanted to hunt with his 8mm Mag on opening day? I jumped at the chance and harvested a buck with it on opening morning. That evening dad handed his 8mm Mag down to me. I hunted with it up until 1997/98 when Remington released the 8mm Mag in their 700 Classic. I purchased one and immediately swapped the pretty wood stock out for an HS Precision stock as this rifle was going to get hunted and I had big plans to hunt many far reaching places. I have acquired several versions of the 8mm Rem. mag over the years - 700 Custom Shop North American Custom SS, 700 Custom Shop Safari, another 700 BDL the same vintage as my dads was left to me by dads best friend whom unexpectedly passed a few years back (this gun was unfired in the original box), but I still do 95% of my hunting with the 700 Classic 8mm. This gun has traveled the country with me and has a pile WV deer under its belt, a beautiful Colorado Elk, a Custer SP Buffalo, Maine Moose, Maine black bear, a couple Quebec Caribou and around a dozen Georgia hogs. It has performed flawless on all of those trips. For deer sized game and hogs I always used a 185 Core Lokt loading with IMR 4831. For elk, moose, and buffalo, I used the 200 gn. Swift A frame with IMR7828. For Black Bear and Caribou, I used the Nosler factory loading with the 200 gn. Accubond. I am a reloader and have plenty of component bullets in the Core Lokt, A Frame, and Accubond. I have not developed any pet loads for the Accubond but plan to do so in the next year as the cost and availability of any factory ammo is nonexistent or outrageously priced. I spent a fail bit of time trying to develop a load with the Nosler E-Tip for my Colorado Elk hunt, but I just could not get them to shoot acceptably. I am intrigued by the Barnes TSX because I like its controlled expansion, deep penetration, weight retention. If I ever draw another Maine Moose tag, I will work on a load with the Barnes TSX to see what I can come up with. The recoil is manageable, but not a cartridge you would want to shoot all day. This does hinder load development in my eyes. I will say after shooting my 700 Classic 8mm, my 700 Custom Shop SS, and Dads Weatherby Vanguard 7mm Mag side by side a few weeks ago. I would much rather shoot either of those 8mm mags from a recoil standpoint. That Vanguard flat out kicks.

I appreciate the great info guys. I’ve currently got some 4350, 4831sc, 7828ssc on the shelf and some retumbo on the way. I thought I had bought dies for it but I can’t find them. I bought my 8mm rem mag two years ago. The original owner shot two shots through it and put it away. The second owner was going to rebarrel the action and just never got around to doing it. I bought the gun in pristine condition and 229 pieces of brass for $850. Put a small break on it and a Trijicon scope and I m just about ready to start testing it out.

Is This cartridge based on the 375 H&H mag? Yes, 375 H&H necked down to 8mm and the taper blown out of the case. The 7mm STW is then based off the 8mm Rem Mag, further necked down and with a sharper shoulder. I've got the 7mm STW and love it, I've shot the 8mm but never owned or loaded for one. 7828 should be a good powder for it, as should Ramshot Magnum (if you can find any, it is my preferred powder for the STW but I haven't seen it on the shelf for years).

I was always interested in an 8mm Rem Mag in my youth, but after my wife got me a 375H&H for a Xmas present never looked back.

Thanks I will check them out. I have been very opportunistic over the years in hoarding 8mm components and based on current prices, I am really glad I did. I have some empty factory ammo boxes with a $14.99 price tag on them those were the days lol.

It would seem that using an 8MM Mag to shoot deer is like hunting squirrels with a 30-30. I think of an 8MM as a large big game rifle for bear, elk, moose, etc.
If someone tears down the American flag and puts another flag in its place, that person should get a free, mandatory one way trip to that country.
