I'm hoping to get out trapping some yotes this week and was wondering if you guys could give me some tips. Such as trap placement, snare placement, just basic info. The weather is kicking my butt with rats and freezing up at night so I figure I better do something else. Thanks in advance!

Youth Trapper, here is my advice on land or water trapping. Don't worry about every little detail, just go out and set as many traps as you have time to set. Pocket sets for mink and coon, DPs on location, 220s in trails, dirt holes for canines. Take EVERY daylight minute available to you to either set traps or check traps. With a large sample you can see what works and what doesn't and make adjustments as you go. Setting a couple of sets doesn't really show you what works or doesn't work, setting 100 sets will open your eyes on what to do. We have had some mild conditions in the Midwest lately, but things are never perfect, you just go and set one location and move onto the next. If you really want to learn spend every minute possible on the trap line and you will figure things out.

I've known a lot of trappers over the years who buy all the equipment and never set it out because the conditions aren't just "right". Well, guess what, the conditions never will be right, good trappers just deal with whatever issues are thrown at them.

Once you know a couple basic sets, it really is as simple as going out and doing it. The more locations you set, the more fur you will catch. The harder you work the more success you will have.

Good luck.

What Gerald said is as good advice as you can get. Put in the time and the results will follow. You can watch and read all that you want. But until you get hands on field experience and practice the mechanics of it all, it will take time. Develop good sound trap setting habits and learn to identity good locations for your intended target species.

Good advice above. Find your location and set with 100% conference as you’re laying steel. Confidence matters

Most successful trappers have one or two sets they make over and over. Practice making a set and do it 50 times the same way. Hard work leads to success. One tip I heard long ago was to set your traps facing the wind. A coyote will come from down wind to your set. Setting your traps with the wind in your face automatically lines up you as the coyote so you know which side he will be coming in on. If the wind is consistent. Always play the wind. If there is no wind cooler air falls down the sides of hills into the valleys at night so you can set a trap a little higher up on a hill and get one to smell it down the hill and come up to your set.
If you know another successful trapper it will help if they let you go with them to show you the ropes.
Don't give up- find a way to do what you want. Set the bare spots to keep the snow off your traps. Keep going like Gerald says- Use every minute of daylight you can the best you can.
I know a successful trapper who agonizes over exact location. He does things different than me and it bothers him. He gets hung up on it and can't function. When you find a spot put a trap in and don't second guess things. Set right on an old track if there is one. If your location is off coyotes will show you where your trap should be. You will develop your own style and way of doing things but sometimes you get an idea form someone that saves you time or makes you think different. We all are still learning no matter how old we get so don't think we have all the answers.
If you have family groups you want to catch set traps for that number of coyotes. If you are fur trapping set one trap per location. Figure out the population of your coyotes and that will tell you how many traps to set and how far apart. There are in some ways a lot to this but in others it all about just setting traps- Good luck!
