Learning the language is probably the hardest part of any esoteric pursuit. Trust me I had some “language” when my fingers got caught! Thanks for your support and earlier comments too. I’m eager to try again.

Next time, lift the loose jaw, put fingers, or thumb under the jaw to set the pan. If it goes off, you are under and out of way of the jaws. No way to get pinched.

I understand what you mean. It is a safe area. This happened when I was actually learning how to compress the long springs ; breaking the trap so to speak over my leg. I prob hesitated and let loose with my hand in the way.

Better get used to a bit of pain and disappointment, if you want to be a trapper. That's life in general. Lol

First that is a great trap for holding a lot of different critters, especially Mr. coon. And these are really good people here, just shy of new people that dont sound like they know what trapping is all about. Those people can turn out to be hunting for something to use against trapping. Go to the Archives here and you will learn a LOT and go to conventions big and small, what ever fits your schedule. This is an extremely demanding occupation/hobby what ever you want ot call it and it comes with a lot of responsibility to do things right and ethically. Join in and you will get to know us......jk

Longspring nomenclature can be particularly confusing to a new trapper.
General breakdown by jawspread
4.5" #1 5.5" #2 6" #3 6.5" #4 7.5" #5
But any of these may vary +/- by maker as there's no hard and fast rules.
Now to confuse things. The number of springs as longsprings can be single spring or double spring.
A double spring #1 is a #11
The rest of the numbers are all double longs unless you take one off of a #2. Then it's a #1.5. Confusing to say the least.
Unlike coilsprings there are not any 1.65 or 1.75 longs that I'm aware of.
Coils roughly follow the same sizing convention with the 1.5, 1.65, 1.75 falling between a 1 and 2. And modern makers have gone away from numbering using 450, 550, 650 instead. Thanks so much for the help!!! I have MB 450s that I just love. Offset jaws and hopefully big enough to someday hold a coyote. I don’t mind paying more for a good product. Animal welfare means a lot to me

So where are you? Do you belong to any one OF the Pa districts trapping associations? Look up Pa trapping Association and find your district......jk
