Another old Amacker, from the early 80’s. We had two of them. No cables on these, just bolts. One stayed out on same tree, for years. This one(pic) stayed in storage shed for probably 25 years or so. I took the metal seat off and replaced it a net seat. Still in use. (Those gaffs will put the hurt on a pine tree)

I found that it is colder up in a tree stand also.
I find that its harder to rotate around for a shot behind you too.
I have hunted from mostly home made treestand/platforms in my time.
After a couple of years I quit using tree stands.
I like sitting on the ground leaning against a tree.
i can bring along a old sleeping bag to pull up to my chest, put my hands in a muff and I'm roasty toasty ready for an all day sit.
Its much more comfortable and safer.

There is something in the human mind that thinks the farther we can see the better.
I'm good with small shooting lanes and letting the deer come within 10yrads or less when I sit in the thick brush.

I think being above ground during rifle season has a lot of advantages, safety wise as well as concealment. Though I’m not much of a regular rifle season guy.

Neat.

I am thinking about building an old school wood stand in a sycamore on my farm. Figured big bolts and my cordless impact and treated wood would make a nice stand with roof. More of a tree house. My 11 year old dropedva doe under that tree this morning from a ladder stand 96 yards away.

I was planing on building a shooting house in that field but I think a tree house is likely to get completed where a shooting house will probably never get started.

That was the first deer ever shot off a food plot I put in and he was not even hunting the plot.

I still have scars on the inside of my forearms from my first "climbing tree stand" experience.

In the late 70"s I hauled up some boards, big nails, and a hammer into my brother's woods for a few years and built what I figured was a Taj Mahal of tree stands. Killed many deer from that stand and actually lived to tell about it. Then one day I was in a local sport shop and found that he was having someone build climbing treestands and he was selling them for $35. Your feet were held on the stand with pieces of bungee cord and you just king of hung onto the tree trunk with your arms while climbing......or coming down. I thought that stand would be the best thing since sliced bread and came home with one,

I lived in town then and my lot really had no decent trees but there was a dandy telephone pole right out in front. It was the same pole I used to climb with climbing spikes to illegally hook up my cable t.v. I was excited to show off my new stand to my then girlfriend (now wife) and promptly started to climb it. I got a good ways up and it held me just fine...then I had to figure how to get it down the pole. The next thing I knew I was on my way down...sliding down the pole trying to hang on with my arms. I hit the ground with one of my feet still in the bungees so at lease something had worked. The insides of my forearms were pretty much shredded with creosote-soaked splinters in my arms. I still have the scars to show how nice my first climber was.

I used that climber for many years...hung up in the tree accessed by quite an assortment of 2X4's hailed to the tree. Ladder stands tend to work out a little better for me than climbers these days.

I won a Loc-On LEM treestand in a giveaway at the Dunhams Sports here in town back in the mid-late 80s. Those were state of the art back then. they had metal bars, no cables and a carpeted platform that got super icy and slippery.. Squeaking suckers that cut all the blood flow off to your legs due to horrible ergonomics design. Nothing like sitting for 3 hours in a tree, then standing up to no feeling in your legs to climb down. grin

Used it for years, then in the mid 90s some jackwagon needed it more than me. He was kind enough to leave the screw in steps for me.

Just wish I had the cool brass nameplate my grandpa made for it that he had riveted to the frame for me with my name and address on it.

I remember part of the game was being able to figure out how to draw your bow without the old stands creaking or squeaking.

Tighten left butt cheek on seat, push down with right foot platform, lean just a bit foreword. Ahh there it is, silent draw! grin

Now even most of the cheap ones seem quiet right out of the box.

I gave up on climbers and tree stands, it got too hard to get into them, and the climbers scared the stuff out of me, lol

sat against a tree until it was too hard to get up....settled on free resin chairs picked up on garbage day put in an appropriate spot, still killed all the deer I wanted and was able to stand up after...LOL

Came across this one last fall. Was on a nice ridge. Been there so long the belt is grown into the tree and created a scar that runs quite a ways down the trunk. [Linked Image]

My dad bought me this when I was a kid.
Can't even how many 100s of trees it's been strapped to in the 40+ years.

I hunted grizzly bear out of a Baker climber overlooking a moose kill. Brought a Coleman lantern up to provide me some heat. Missed a nice one the morning I was taking the stand in. Didn't expect a bear to be on the kill that time of day. We were both equally surprised to see each other.

Bakers were built 20 miles west of me in Valdosta, Ga.

Met the creator/owner a couple times when I'd go by the facility. Could buy parts amd accessories there. This was in the late 70s or very early 80s.

I bought my Baker in the early eighties. Climbers have come a long way but you have to give credit to Baker. They were the pioneer in climbing stands, at least as far as I know.

Quit climbing trees a number of years ago. Actually enjoy ground hunting better. Tried out a hammock chair this year and was pretty happy with it. Small and light weight. I strap it to my back pack and use if needed.
