Yes, starting around Halloween someone is usually checking every day. I caught the first one this year in this village.

I heard that you take the smallest guy in the village, put some swim goggles on him and periodically shove him down a hole in the ice to have a look around. No?

Also set a few burbot hooks just for the halibut.

Burbot is some mighty fine eating!! Some winters burbot and rice or rabbit and rice was a staple. We used to put 100 chum just for trapping bait and burbot bait but those days are gone. Kids would get up every morning and check the rabbit snares and burbot lines before they did their homeschool, sometimes they'd find a few grouse as well.

Very nice picture worthy of framing for both of them ! I'm jealous of each time I see ling / burbot after a catch .
Since I moved now its a long drive to a river where a person has a chance to catch some .

Caught this male marten recently and did not notice the oddity until I went to skin it!
3 legged and it looked like the marten was born that way. No stub and absolutely no
scar tissue on hide. Marten was healthy and as fat as any I've caught this winter.

Dang, that's crazy! Might have made some money on the taxi market.

I caught one exactly like that several years ago. Same leg missing too.
I'm sure it was a birth defect as it didn't even have a scapula on that side.

Odd we never noticed when taking them out of the trap.

He was a big male. Fat and healthy.That missing leg sure didn't seem to hinder him. Caught him in a #0 on a pole

I caught one similar to that as well. Seemed like there was no limb at all but it actually had an undeveloped limb under the fur. Maybe i have a picture somewhere.

Back when I was using #0 & 1's on pole sets for marten I use to catch quite a few Lynx incidental on those poles.
This is the first time I had one stick its head in a 120 under a bucket !!
