In the woods hunting and something is impaled and needs taken out.
Cutting something open that’s not in the kitchen or the house.
Cutting fishing line.
Cutting up that roadkill rabbit I found while in the way to make some sets.
It doubles as a punch, screwdriver, and machete at times.

"I hate having stuff in my pockets.
what does one need a pocket knife for on a daily basis?"
My EDC knife is a clip-on, never even know it's there. My EDC is the handiest, most used tool I probably have. I use it every day. Having it is not an obsession, it's normal.
give me a couple of examples of what you use it every day for if you don't mind. I'm serious, I can't see what I'd ever use one for. I’ll humor you just this once. I’m a carpenter so it’s always handy. Opening packaging, sharpening my pencil, scoring a a line, trimming shims, prying staples out of door jambs or the edge of a piece of plywood…

It doubles as a punch, screwdriver, and machete at times. Spend lots of time in the woods, I can't remember the last time I came across something "impaled and needed taking out". Did get a fishing lure in my cheek years ago while fishing alone, couldn't see it obviously so I left it there till I got back to civilization and had it removed then without a knife. Pocket Knife would of been of no use at the time. I usually wait till I get in the house or workshop to cut something open, no need to open it right here right now. I carry tools while fishing for cutting line and if I'm using fishing line around the house for other uses I have utility knives stored where the fishing line is stored. Carry a container with tools used for trapping, in there is a knife. Again I don't need to cut up the rabbit right on the road where I find it, I'd toss it in the vehicle and cut it up later when needed. All sorts of tools can be used for uses other than designed, again, if I need a punch, screwdriver or machete (don't know when the last time I needed a machete was tho) I have those tools and others in a couple of places that I take things when I need to do work on them. Pocket knifes are useful when your in a remote place, even then if your going there to do a task take the tools with you that you most likely will need. If a knife is going to be needed take a decent knife for the purpose like filleting a fish rather than a pocket knife. But I don't need to carry a pocket knife if I'm working in the workshop or hanging around the house, or driving around in the car. all places have all sorts of other tools at hand.

I need to carry a pocket knife for all those that don"t. I have never asked someone else to borrow their pocket knife. If It happened often I'd carry my own but as it has never happened I don't need to carry one.

Grown men shooting small bucks ticks me off too. It’s the old “I drove all this way I’m taking something home!” mentality. Primadonna’s preaching hunting ethics or standards that have no based on conservation or regulation tick me off. If the herd is not compromised then sit in the corner quietly. Yup, there are no ethics in hunting. There are rules and tradition whether mandated or self imposed but at the end of the day meat is still meat and dead is dead.

I don't wear rings, a wrist watch or anything, jewelry either. Reach down into a tight spot and the last thing you need is a ring to catch on something.

Dirty d. Today I have used my knife to cut twin on straw bails, open a package the wife was firing with, remove a thorn and clean my nails.
Yesterday it gutted and processed a deer.
I have turned around and gone home and been late to work when I didn have my knife in my pocket. I lost it or my son did when gutting 2 deer recently. I stoped at the store and bought 2 new ones before work.
I also like a multi tool. Didn't thin I would use it much but after I had it I found it being used all the time.
I don't use my edc gun much but it sure is handy when I do.
I found a multi tool once while fishing, it was a pretty good quality one. Carried it around for about a month or so. Never used it, gave it away. Bugged me to cart the thing around. I guess my mind set is different than most. I keep tools in areas where they will be used. So if I need open a package, I wait till I get to where the tools are then I open it. No need to open right here right now. My example of breaking down boxes for the dump, I keep a knife in the garage where I break the boxes down. Don't need to carry a knife if there is one handy. If I'm deer hunting I carry a knife for gutting a deer. Of course if it always better to leave the knife home then you'll for sure shoot a deer Your examples, I handle by doing the task where tools are already handy or I bring a knife that is usually better suited for the task if I know its going to be needed instead of relying on a pocket knife. But I don't carry a pocket knife every where I go just cause I might need it.

this guy gets it. I keep knives around where they are handy along with other tools but to carry one on me at all times just in case is silly. And the knives I keep around are better suited for the tasks at hand then a pocket knife would be. Try filleting a fish with a pocket knife vs a fillet knife, you can do it but I'll bet a fillet knife is a better tool for the job. And again, you take the fish home or to camp to clean them more often than not. Keep the fillet knife in camp/home where its handy.

I usually but don't always carry a pocket knife. When I don't, I'm constantly asking my husband for his. Often it's for opening packages. Not much point in packing packages from the road to the house 3/4 miles away to open them and then packing the empty boxes another 3/4 mile back out to the trash can, lol. I use the knife for opening bags of soil or mulch, opening bags of dog food or poultry food, cutting small branches out of the way that whack ya on the trails, making sticks to roast hotdogs, cutting zip ties, getting a sliver out, cleaning dirt from gardening out from under my nails, cutting open bales of wheat or pine straw, cutting t-shirts up to make ties to tie up my tomato plants, cutting rope, twice, fishing line, etc. There may be some days I don't use a pocket knife but there aren't a lot.

Have always packed a pocket knife since first allowed to as a kid. My uncle that I used to hunt with taught me a knife is used to cut things and not a gasket scrapper or pry bar.I don't loan it out just the same as I don't load out my dog. or traps. Not many days goes by I DON'T use one of mine. Even my wife has her own.
