Interesting attitude on supply end, he figures we will keep producing goods no matter what the cost is to produce them vs what we get paid. I guess for most trappers its not a business but a recreation and he can keep making money if the demand is there. He has got us figured out.

He clearly has no understanding of the " trapping" business. I'd like him to come here and run the line with me for a week and I'd show him what " risk" is.

"Businesses compete to offer their goods and services to customers at the lowest price. The average sales pitch these days serves as a vehicle to deliver that number to customers. Many entrepreneurs pride themselves on cutting back their costs in order to attract customers by offering the lowest prices possible. As a result, some businesses have become engaged in an endless battle to drop their prices faster than their opponents."

I suspect this is what goes on in China .

Notice he mentioned if they would not have automated the fleshing of coon and beaver they most likely would not be in the fur business. Interesting that the focus is totally on market and work backword to to the supply end.
They are able to calculate what the selling prices will be for the different species and grades and then factor in their costs to maintain profitability. Pretty much the opposite of what most of us harvesters do.
Notice the cost per pelt now doing the routes compared to when costs were lower and volumes much larger. Just like many industries volume is a big deal as you can spread overhead and operating costs over more volume and even with narrower margins be profitable.

I typically sell to them, but my 30 or less pelts don't make much difference in the grand scheme of things. What I don't like is him mentioning the "risk" as far as higher production costs as far as fuel, meals, and hotel rooms...we ALL feel that not just them, but I have enjoyed doing business with them, so I'm sure that I still will.

Heart warming philosophy. He would be so much fun to have as a trapping friend at a line camp .

Be assured that both the "risk" and the profit margin are built in to the offer you get at the window. But, as one of the biggest Groney advocates so often proclaimed, you're not paying any commission!!
