Do you trap more coon in early or late November?

I don’t start until after thanksgiving here. Coon, fox, and coyote are in much better shape here consistently. I am south and west of you it appears if you are in WI. Yours may be better sooner than ours.
I could catch a ton if I trapped earlier but quality is hit and miss.
I’m starting this Thursday. Got a warm up hitting this week so they will be moving again. Also our cat season opens Dec. 1st and then any cats I get are fair game.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Mando, the talk about early and late fur quality in coon...I just haven't seen it. We open Nov 10 and used to open Nov 5 and a few years on the 15th. I started the day we opened and never felt I was docked.

It’s been 10+ years since I’ve targeted coon in any serious numbers. We don’t exactly have great coon here and price wise hasn’t made sense to go looking fir them recently; get way more than need destroying other sets as it is and I’m nit producing coon just to keep a market alive. But when prices made it worthwhile for me to run a coon line the primary factors were weather and deer season. Always started around the 25th of October. Yep there’d be some junk then but good ones too. In good market the junk was less concerning. But to make good catches always needed a long stretch of time. Lots of coon here but large catches can present some logistic problems compared to other states. Big season catches usually meant winter held off long enough to keep after them. If waited until early November to start then firearm deer season interrupts the line as it starts November 15th which really means you’re forced to a mixed water line If wait until deer season closes at end of November yiu could easily be snowed in with all coon denned up. Some years the snow holds off thru month ofvDecember. Other years no such luck. Some years there’s a nice December warmup where you can do good. Overall I always killed more coon before November 15th because of good weather conditions. If I only wanted a smal number of high quality ones for tanning etc likely wouldn’t start in October but don’t think I’d be too concerned what part of November I caught them in

Mando,

I'm from the Eau Claire area and I trap my coon in early November. I'd prefer to wait a little longer but our coon den up and you can't get the numbers. I pulled my coon line just before deer gun season started and most of them really looked nice. If the market/price for coon was good, we wouldn't be having this discussion. I used to start on the first day of the season and all the coon sold but that's not the case any more. You're better off waiting when you can.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

I agree with Lance. I'm from the other side of the state, but the same holds true. Earlier I'll try to target dryland coon in woods and barns away form water. They tend to be larger boars who prime up earlier. Seems like the closer to water I get, the higher the number of sows and YOY I get.

Very true K snow. I target the corn, woods, ridges and barns away from the water as well. Lots of big boar coon and not near as many young coon.

It takes a long period of cold weather to put coon In for the winter. If you can track those coon to their dens You have It made. They will move around the den site but won't travel far.

They might have holed up the last few days in this cold snap, but if I wanted some I'd set Friday. They'll move this weekend with the lows around 30 or so. Just enough to mess up all the canine sets, haha.
