Here is something I’ve used for many years that is right out of Charlie Dobbins land trapping book (aka one of my trapping “bibles”).
I still have a box of old cassette tapes I’ve kept around for this very purpose. A wad of tape, tied off to a length of fishing line, and snip several of the tap strands to make them single dangling strands instead of loops of tape hanging down. This stuff is very light, flutters in the lightest breeze, and it gets me around our laws here of can’t use fur or feathers for attractors near footholds.
Makes a great flagging piece for cat sets. It also doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb like tinsel or other flags that humans may readily see if in the area. Pretty subtle but gets it done for cats.
I make a bunch of these up ahead of time and store them individually in cheap sandwich bags. Easy to put a few in my coat pocket and start walking the catty areas for sets. The fishing line makes a good way to hang them on an overhead branch at the set.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I can see the grin on his face.

when folks ask me about learning to trap, "Land Sets and Trapping Techniques" is the first book I recommend!

while I would not have thought about that as quickly as you did Paul I agree completely with the statement Your Dad had a great sense of humor And that was a huge asset to his ability with how he dealt with people It seems very appropriate Charlie Dobbins scholarship fund and the Trappers Defense Fund will be teaming up to help young trappers pay for their education

Hey, I still play some of my old cassette tapes fellas. smile Not ready to tear them up yet, they all still work. I can part with some old CD discs if the need arises. I don't do much if any flagging any longer. Just set the trails and good locations and things seem to happen.

Old Charlie and I talked about the cassette tapes and ribbons at his truck tail gate set up years back. I still remember noticing his bunk cot set up in the back of his truck.
