it occurred to me that mine should be called a deer drag , fire wood and yard work sled since it almost never sees ice fishing.

how many of you have them and use them to drag deer out , makes it so much easier and loading in the truck , van , or SUV so much easier

even on leaves or grass it is easier than dragging the deer

really cuts down on the mess also

handy to keep in the back of the truck for road kill and when trapping to stack the catch in to minimize the mess especially when I was trapping out of my van

my truck has a tool box that takes up the entire bed , that is flat with the bed rails so any deer going in there need to get slid in under the topper .

I have 2, I bought some beat up pop over shacks at an auction for $4 a piece, took all of the shack stuff off and now I use the sleds for pulling trapping gear behind the snowmobile, pulling wood, pulling the kids up massive sledding hills and occasionally ice fishing equipment

Spot on- Otter sled is the way to go and easy to move a bear by yourself- fills it up like a Jello Mold, we drive right onto the trailer with the ATV. As Pete mentioned- great in the back of the truck when trapping, I made an expanded metal grate for the bottom of the sled- it's elevated 2" so blood can drain and be hosed out later.
I prefer the Smitty Sled I made for ice fishing and trapping- I spaced the skis at the same width of my ATV tires and it never tips as an otter sled can- it's also way easier to pull it by hand than an Otter Sled when there's more snow.

I use a small otter sled for trapping also. Even works as a little boat/barge to float behind me when setting creeks and shallow rivers.

How do you keep your stuff from getting coated with slush and snow? That thing would be a slushy/snowy mess if I pulled it around where I fish.

I have a magnum otter sled and a smaller otter sled. I use the magnum for hauling stuff out to my fish house in winter.

It's not always about catching fish. That's what people who don't catch fish usually say.

Now that our kids are grown, I have been using their plastic sleds to haul deer out with. This past opening of muzzleloarder, the 27 year old son killed a deer. I told him there was a deer sled under a log and leaves behind his stand. He replied that it was the sled he and his brother used to sled ride with the one day a year we get snow. Our water never gets hard here so ice fishing is mute.

farm and fleet had the large otter sleds clearance last spring for 49

I see the Shappell sleds for about 55-60

I think I paid 40 for mine in around 2009 on some sort of sale

when you think of how long they last it isn't so bad

but yes some they want crazy prices for and the same or similar sled at another store will be a much better price

by the inflation calculator 40 dollars in 2009 is 57.36 today
so the value of your money went down and the sled stayed the same.

Otters are tough to beat. Last winter we went to Cascade Idaho in search of 2-3 pound perch. One of my buddies broke a rear track of his Polaris Ranger. We jacked it up rigged a block on the hub and set it in my Otter sled. Drove it 2 miles back to the trailer and managed to get it loaded. Not harm done to the sled. I don’t think I’d buy anything but another Otter if needed.

I have one of those and as of yet I haven't destroyed it, works as advertised but I haven't used it as a replacement for a UTV track.... laugh

Otter sleds also float. I've towed one behind me while wading in a marsh for muskrats.

I have what I think is a 14 year old Jet sled and my son has the otter new last year

even if you had used it as a UTV track and tore it up it would be cheaper than a off road tow

Shot a heavy whitetail in MT once. Drove to town and bought a plastic snow sled to drag him over snow and rock, plus slightly uphill. Never been ice fishing. What do ice fishermen drink?

drink whatever you like but you put the beer in the cooler to keep it from freezing before you to drinking it and no nursing one or it goes to slush on you.

Eagleye......I think iam the only guy in NH that runs those 1970 vintage Beaver Dam Tip ups. I bought them from a guy In Wisconsin ,advertising them on Craig’s list.....all restored too.

They are great if there is little to no snow on the ice. Very low flag .

When the snow is Deep...the tall cross stick traps come out.

I run them Beaver Dams in 2 feet of water ...on shore...for Brookies and rainbows.

when you slip with the spud bar and bust the beaver dam because it was frozen down

they aren't that hard to make new wood

good wood working project when I was 14
