Looking for any input on Fisher refusal or lack of commitment to a set. I have had a fisher visit a ground cubby with a wire cage 3 times the last 6 days and it will not fully commit. The cage is baited with a beaver hindquarter a full muskrat carcass and I am using Crossbones for the call lure. I chose the location in early November placed a full beaver carcass there with a Cellular style Trail Camera and I started getting pictures of a fisher on day 17. The trap was added on Thanksgiving day with fresh bait.

Is the trap noticeable? Human scent? Other thoughts?

Thank You for any feedback.

Jeff

The only time I had a fisher not caught (that I know of) was when the cage trigger was frozen. Broke the ice and had him the next day. They are usually pretty bold in my experience.

Thanks for responses. I generally run a leaning pole with the wire cages set 4' off the ground with some evergreens for coverage as well and NYS requires all bait to be covered so the wire cages work very well. I generally catch 3-5 per year and have no clue how often they visit etc.. so setting up the camera was only as a learning expereince.

I use wire cages like yourself....some even vertical too.

But I set my triggah wires on top...And I bend those wires back towards the bait....with a good upward swoop.

Just makes a more inviting entrance and they don't have any wires in their face

Plus this set up allows red squirrels and ermine to work the bait...with less chance of firing the trap

Had em go by a set and not break stride several times. Then one day you catch em.

No idea why

This year I caught a fisher on sardines in a hole in the base of a stone wall. Reset the trap and a few days later the ground was all torn up for about 8 feet along the base of the wall, but the trap was untouched. . At these sets I just prop the trap at the hole and lightly cover with a hemlock bough. First fisher refusal that I know of.

I am no Fisher expert, but usually can fill my tag if drawn. I have seen in the snow where fisher would Circle the bucket or wood cubby but would not commit to the set. I trap in farmland and I think that some fisher get educated after getting wacked by a BG and not caught. I have gone to setting footholds outside the cubby with good success. It works for me.

Cover the cage so there is only one place to investigate. Add a sweet bait or lure removing any LDC in cubby.
Wait !

Fisher can be the easiest predator to catch or the most fickle creature on earth depending on the day !
