My 11 year old had his first wrestling scrimmage tonight. He was nervous but tried not to act like it or show it. The coach only had my son in one match and later in the evening so he could watch and get rid of some of the nervousness. The most other teams kids were more muscular and ripped vs a lot of our kids are a bit heavier Well my son was finally up and he gets the muscled up kid that's 3 inches taller.. Before he knew who he would get I told him you realize it but you're stronger than every kid in here. I promise you there is not one that can swing an 8 lb maul, load wood, pack 50 lb bags of feed , or toss hay like you can. Now they may have better techniques becuse they have more experience but you are stronger. I also told him to not hold back like he does at practice and don't worry about hurting the other kid becuse they are not going to hold back for you. He expected to get beat and I didn't like that but would not like him being cocky and figured humble was better and let it go. . My boy walks up they shake the match starts and well my son is in blue https://www.instagram.com/reel/C0QHmTVNX3E/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

The greatest thing about wrestling is you win by yourself team mate can't take the credit for it.

How did the other kid take it? He took it well it was not his first match. It was the first one he got beat in last night . I think he was More in shock. I know I was you can't tell well in the video but that kid was built and the most developed kid at the event. He may not have took it so well if he knew it was my son's first match up and he has Only been doing it it for 3 weeks. I was wondering to myself if the kid had been held back a couple years or started school late he appeared to have so much more of a physical development advantage when i was watching before i found out my son was going to get him. Apparently his family was sitting right behind my wife( seating was very limited so I gave my seat to a mom that was sitting on the concrete floor and I took the floor) my wife said she could hear they were watching the video they took over and over behind her so they could learn. I did the same thing with sawyer. His technique could use a lot of work but his strength and aggression covered his lack of skill. But that's just my ammeter uninformed dad opinion. . I was Very suprised how he completely dominated the kid and it was like he never had a chance. My son is never aggressive and on it like that in practice and after listening to him before the match I believe it is becuse he does not want to hurt anyone on his team. But once he saw how the kids went at it and I told him he had better go after it and not let up that's exactly what he did. Who would have ever known he could listen. I know his mom didn't know that.

looking good , keep up that fight keep taking it too them , it isn't over till the ref slaps the mat and says it is quit fighting about 5 seconds after that
by the looks of it some one told the other kid , this was your kids first match and he wasn't expecting that take down , he looked surprised when his leg was going up
I wrestled in HS didn't have all the youth programs back them
I was a little handicapped I had just turned 14 was 205# and had to wrestle 275 I eventually got to winning some , keep getting the video , it was VHS back then and you don't always remember what happened on the mat but seeing it over and over you can see and coach can explain what you want to do in a situation.
doc said you can't go below 199 and there was no other weight classes back then from 189 to 275
  they just approved the new weight classes here 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215 and 285
a very noticeable shift up in the last 30+ years
I didn't have a lot of good moves but I had long arms and I could cross face cradle fast , by the time they knew what hit them in the face I had the cradle locked.
now the down side is , there went your every weekend till March my youngest wrestled club in like 2-3rd grade and it is now insane how many opportunities there are to wrestle it is almost a cult my wife said no Sunday tournaments there were often a Saturday and a Sunday and more than one of each within driving distance you could spend every daylight hour on a bleacher or in the car driving every weekend
invest in a bleacher seat and save your back

Great first match, congratulations to your son!
I signed up for intramural wrestling at lunchtime when I was in the 7th grade in junior high. I had to wrestle a 9th grader in my first match. I was clueless and he wasn't. He picked me up and slammed me to the mat and when I tried to push myself up, I couldn't, I looked down at my left arm and I had an extra elbow about halfway to my wrist. Then the pain hit, I didn't notice the loud pop when it broke but the crowd did.
The guy was still trying to pin me before the ref stopped it. Because I had just eaten lunch, I had to wait until the next day before they could put me to sleep and set it. I remember it feeling like a Charlie horse all day and night.
I changed to gymnastics working rings for my winter sport, the strength I gained working rings helped me on all kinds of stuff later in life. 8 years of Karate taught me to not let someone grab me and wrestle.

Nice job. Your son has some good initial instincts.
Wrestling was mandatory for my sons starting at 5 years old. It develops so many life skills (including being able to handle yourself off the mat). One still in little league and one in high school now.
I hope your son has a great season!
P.S. Stay chill at tournaments. The adrenaline and emotion can be a lot for new wrestling dads. The wrestling moms are even worse!

I think the parents will be the hardest thing to deal with from what I saw and heard last night. This is just the start to get them interested. My oldest is right at being to old for this group but likes to practice with them. So I think they will be getting into a boxing gym and jiu-jitsu if I can find good ones and it should build them into well rounded individuals.
