Miss Aalaiya learning and helping out putting up beaver with her Papa
She's so very proud to be learning and doing it with me.
I'm beside myself with happiness, none of the kids or grandkids expressed this much interest. My greatgrandaughter is fulfilling a lifetime of trapping for me by giving someone to pass it on to.

That is wonderful to have that. I’m pretty envious! (Well, in a good way)!

First check of the season. Combatting high water levels so couldn’t get as many traps set as I wanted. But got 9 beaver and a nute from 21 traps.

Pulled another medium from the golf course and had a couple snapped traps. Found another spot to put in another 330 and got permission on another nearby property with beaver issues. I’ll be busy setting more tomorrow I guess!

Great looking pelts newfox.
Too bad you will lose 1 size by leaving the nose and whiskers on.

I wonder whether the local buyers at the association sales in NY dock that way?

Standard is from An inch ahead of the eyes if the nose and whiskers are left on the pelt.
I suppose if a buyer doesnt use standard measure, then no need to use the size tarrif oval either.

I've never seen anyone cut nose and whiskers off except on the internet. I do split the nose so it lays flat and you get a little more length. I've seen buyers hold the ruler back a little when done that way, but never an inch. Standard measurement is length, nose to tail, plus width. I've seen a buyer take a diagonal measurement and double it or other nonstandard measurements. If I am taking hides to a country buyer I am going to measure them all ahead of time and know what they should be. He can measure them however he wants, but if he wants to cut his price because he is dropping their sizes due to nonstandard measuring they are going to come home with me.

Amen bearcat, my dad told me years ago they were selling beaver pelts and the buyer measured short from the nose, his friend took out his pocket knife and cut it off, the buyer says what are you doing, he said if you aren’t measuring it you aren’t getting it.

That's great newfox. What a super story.
I sell to a local private buyer and he wants nose and whiskers on his. All I do is trim off the outside fat part of the lips. He's a Seneca Indian crafter.
I sell the rest at Hinsdale and there's a few crafters there also so I'm not sure it hurts the price so much. Same with the felt buyers.
If I was shipping to a major auction house I'd probably look into exactly what paid the most and do it to their specs.
All in all I've been happy with what I've got in return the last few years compared with major auction prices

Seems like I heard at one point NAFA was measuring for size with a machine that took a picture of the square inches per pelt? Wonder if FHA does the same now since they got a lot of NAFA's old equipment.

Caught a couple at the golf course today, one really large one. I’ll weigh him tomorrow.

Apparently he’s so big I can’t load the photo….,,
