A little quick backstory first. I’m a newer trapper and live in Colorado. We can only use cages and it’s been a total learning curve but I’m been loving every minute of it.
This morning checking sets i went to my favorite set and one that my son and I set together. As I approach my trap I notice something is totally wrong. My trap has been moved and has been re-set. It’s facing the opposite direction and all the brush and branches have been thrown off of it.
I can instantly tell there had been a bobcat inside. There was fur everywhere, the bait had been eaten and scat inside the trap. Like I said the door was open and the cage was re set but my catch was gone. The real stinger is it’s only day two of our season so it would’ve been real special to catch a cat so soon.
I’m not here for a pity party but was curious to see who else has had a catch stolen from them. I would especially like to hear from any other Colorado cage trappers. It’s real unfortunate but it ain’t gonna stop me. I’m going to set a camera on it tomorrow and try and catch the guy if he comes back.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well.

Douchebaggery has no limits. It seems to happen to everyone. Sorry though.

I’ll be the first to give you a pity party. I am so disappointed in mankind. So sorry that happened. I’ve never had a theft on the trapline that I know of, I’m a hobby trapper. But someone got into our garage and stole our 150 dollar ATV moose utility bag and it was unnerving.
Don’t let it stop you from trapping. Prepare for the Best, Expect the Worst

Hopefully you took pictures to document the situation. You should also report the theft to the F&G department. Won’t get your cat back but it will make them aware of the situation.

Taking fur from a trap that is not yours is a crime.

I was told by an anti not long ago that they wouldn't steal my traps but they would release any animals that were in them. Either way, I said i hoped a rabid raccoon would gnaw their face off when they did it. Maybe someone released your catch, wrong either way.

I would LOVE to see that unfold!! Ha ha ha
People don’t even know how to restrain their own dogs let alone an angry and frightened critter in a foothold that they don’t know how to operate

I think I’m going to climb the tree next to my set and attach the camera high, I can’t imagine someone will look up by the trap. It might make for cool catch photos too. Ha.
I think I’m gonna contact our local warden tomorrow, see what he says.

A cage trap is different.
I too would love to see them release from a foothold .

If you have 2 cams put one taking pic of the trap and a second one up high enough up that a person would need a ladder of some kind to mess with it taking pics of the first cam.
Or do like I do and set a trip alarm so if cage is moved there is a loud boom

Having been at the cage game a long time, and hearing about theft on a weekly basis in the boom days. Most cage theft issues are from people setting in high recreation area or making sets that are way too obvious. Out of thousands of cage nights and hundreds of cats caged, i have only had three stolen. One has to be diligent about set locations and how they approach sets to check them. Theft sucks and most of the time it's another trapper if there is blood at the location. Releases can be about anyone.

That is super frustrating. I think you got sound advice from Monster Tom’s. Probably wouldn’t completely dismiss Boco’s either!

If you have cell coverage, cell cams are the way to go. We recently caught 2 different groups of trespassers on the property. One group was just using it to go from one road to the other, the other group just decided to go walking one day and ignore the signs and fence. One group the police caught. The other group confessed real quick when their pics were posted on FB asking if anyone knew who they were. The group who owned up and apologized, we filed no charges. The other we filed a trespass charge against them.
