I have been under the impression that if you use droppings with your set, that you would use droppings picked up somewhere else

But I was watching one of Ed Schneider's videos and he made a comment about droppings not having much scent appeal

So what is the opinion by Trapperman coyote trappers

1) Are they 95% visual, 5% scent?

2) Can you use droppings on the same coyote that deposited them? For example, you pick up some droppings on a 2 track. 100yds away is an intersecting 2 track and you put a set in there because it is a better location. Use the fresh droppings or use something you picked up out of the area.

I am not talking about trapping on 6 sections, just smaller places (<100 ac)

I went out about an hour ago and gathered 4 different clumps here at the house which is not common.
I have a good supply of droppings from previous years and locations

I think I would disagree about scent appeal; they'll definitely get a coyote's attention.

Yes, you can use droppings from the same location and have results. I do it all the time. Enhances it if you hit it with the coyote urine you're using.

I've had coyote's leave droppings by a set and not work the set. Pick them up and put them behind the set trap. Have a coyote on the next check. No way to tell if it was the same coyote, but no doubt from the resident coyotes.

I've even remade catch circles using just the droppings from the dispatched coyote as the attractant with good results.

I think droppings are just like urine, coyotes can't help from sticking their nose in it.

Droppings depending upon age, all have value at a set and give interest to any visiting animal. Even dehydrated droppings have trace odor content. The more recent droppings are quite full of odor and moisture which holds plenty of ID odor from that specific animal. I have caught lots of coyotes from fresh and refreshed old dry droppings that I doctored with the scent I chose for that set.

Silky knows how to play the game. Urine and droppings are the primary calling cards and messaging system of wild and domesticated canines. Need to catch a shy/wary canine. Use a dropping only as the attractor. Find out for yourself if they have any value. Most hard-core seasoned trappers are aware.

I watch my dog mark a spot then 10 minutes later investigate that same spot. I see no reason to believe coyotes wouldn't investigate their own droppings especially if it's in a different area.

Fresh droppings have a lot of scent appeal.

Four week old ones might not have a lot, but some. Hit em with some urine and they have a lot more.

I pick up turds every time I find them.

I put a small amount of gland on old droppings and add them to a set as blocking. Fresh droppings from a catch circle always go to the other end of the line.

I use fresh droppings in a catch circle for the remake. You know you're not trying to catch that coyote again, and even if it is another resident coyote who comes by he is going to investigate it because he is going to wonder what "Frank" was doing here in the circle for so long.

There is probably something to strange droppings from another area, but droppings from the local area work also. If I was trying to catch a particular coyote, like a livestock killer, I probably wouldn't intentionally use droppings from that coyote, but otherwise use whatever is available.

Do you like to freshen your droppings with urine or gland lure?

Take your dog a walk and tell me even old scat doesn't have scent appeal.

I’ve killed more savvy adult coyotes on flat sets with poop than anything else.

Their continued effectiveness on the line is unmatched.

How about the effectiveness of other animal dropping such as fox, bobcat (or house cat), mink, otter, raccoon etc. on coyotes?

Dog, wolf, and coyote all work good. Can't say as I've used any other critters droppings, but by the way my dogs love to gobble up bobcat or house cat crap, I'm sure it would work well as an attractant also.

James Lucero doesn't. I ask him why when I took lessons from him several years back. He said = It ruins the station. His opinion was to leave the droppings alone When dealing with wary older coyotes. BUT as we discussed latter. It's OK to bring in dropping from other areas. I think. His point was = Being old school in sheep. It's better. To NOT move dropping and let the coyote know. That it's game on ! He did use fake droppings and said ~~ it's ok to pick up dropping when = you have removed = The whole family group. Just another. Way to think on it. I don't pick up droppings till latter on. But have dropping on Can Am in Pringle Can right now ! LoL!

I wouldnt question someone who has killed more coyotes than parvo, but are their not dung beetles there? Turds here dont seem to last very long in the warm months. I imagine be the time a coyote revisits a spot they are likely to be gone or at least gone past reasonable identifiability. Especially if they are not full of hair. Im not sure how they would know whether you robbed them of one, weather did, or bugs got to them. I used to always use turds, but it didnt seem to help my catch percentages so I leave a lot of them be these days
