I got an opportunity to get some older window with single pane glass. Some of the glass in the small ones are broke. They are 5x5 feet and the pieces of glass are ~ 1 foot in size that make up the 5x5 foot windows. I'm looking to use then in a line shack, so nothing needs to be new or energy efficient etc..
My question is do you know how expensive it is to replace the glass?

If glass is to expensive look into plexiglass maybe.

Plexiglass is higher then glass. Glass is getting spendy also. Cheapest is to fill those broken panes places with plywood if you don't care how they look? Of find old windows and save the glass and have it cut to the size.

Thanks for the info. It looks like glass isn't high price so that is good. I do have old glass from old windows I can use but I would have someone cut it. I haven't putty in windows for many years, but I have done my share, so I have a clue on that part.
So, with the info I got I will mostly take them. They would look good in the shack and not concerned about energy efficient but I will be heating the place with wood but only there off and on.

Just make sure when measuring the glass to make the panes a little undersize, trying to wrestle a tight pane into maybe not a precise frame will crack them... Good advice! Donnie H >>> thanks for that. I will see about used glass I have a lot of old panes at the ranch which I have saved through the years. I might even take some out of an old homestead I'm waiting to get demolished.

Glass has gone up quite a bit in the last two years. On top of that shipping has gong way up. My wife orders a lot of glass. Most of the time over a thousands pounds at a time. But for what you need it will not be too bad in price. When cutting used glass, it needs to be clean on the side you score it on. Old glass does not cut as easy as new glass. It wii often run rather than follow the score. But it can be done.

My question is do you know how expensive it is to replace the glass? not bad about 5 dollars a square foot for the glass at ace living not that far from an ace hardware I measure my size and drive to the hardware store and let them cut it on their cutting table then wrap it in cardboard and bring it home you go 1/4 inch smaller than your opening so you have 1/8th inch wiggle room all the way around measure extra times and write it down. I like the glazing in a caulk tube much easier to put in nice clean out broken glass and scrape out old glazing these are cheap or an old chisel works https://www.acehardware.com/departm...nd-supplies/painting-accessories/1014816glazing points these hold the glass in while you glaze it https://www.acehardware.com/departments/hardware/window-and-screen-hardware/window-glazing/11182glaze in a tube https://www.acehardware.com/departments/paint-and-supplies/caulk-and-sealants/caulk/12915I think I was getting about 3 36x48 windows out of a tube but it may have been only 2 you want to re-glaze anything that is dry and easy to remove I cheated a little and used a wire brush cup on my 1/4 inch angled die grinder to take out loose glaze it it was really stuck I left it in and glazed over it with new make sure to paint the frames

Ive got lots of old double hung single pane windows, with the old "wavy" glass, I rebuild them a little at a time as I redo each room in the house. Glass is cheap, but, plexiglass is more durable, and not terribly expensive. Also, Ive given up on traditional window glazing putty, and just use a good caulk, smoothed to look like traditional glazing.

plexi glass will crack when it gets cold then gets hit with wind and debris more easily than glass. i use it on my deck a few times and i have to replace it often.
