So I went hunting Saturday evening and shot 2 gray squirrels, when I get home I put the squirrels in my shed to dress and clean later that night. I go to work this morning (Monday) and realize I completely forgot about the squirrels. Is the meat still okay for me to dress and clean the squirrels after I get done with work? The warmest it has gotten since I shot them is probably high 30's or around 40 degrees tops with nights below freezing.

I'd clean and eat them.

as long as you hadn't busted the gut , and it has been 40 or below you should be fine

let your nose tell you if you want to make them into bait rather than supper.

oh and 2 hours later they were holding onto their hides like superman , you have some pulling to do 2 days later

I am seriously thinking of packing some gloves and a bag and cleaning them right away next time I have fought 3 out of their skins this year , they were all very attached to their skin.

I skin them right after they are shot. I use the pants and sweater method. Slit across the spine, insert fingers and pull apart. Then clean them and slip into baggie. In that time the woods have settled back down. My 36 flinter is a bit noisier than a 22.

You could always put down a dirt hole for bait if you don't eat them.

not going to lie used a 12ga for the last few , I was looking for a pheasant and they made themselves better targets

and you know what they say. a squirrel in hand is better than 2 pheasant on the road you can't shoot. (maybe I just made that up)

I always clean my squirrels while I wait fore the woods to settle back down, A fresh kill cleans like a dream, cooling the meat as quick as you can keeps it sweet, and good to eat.
If you find it got a little whiffey, wash it with baking soda to eliminate that.
