Anyone have much luck running 220 boxes for bobcat in WI? I see people in other states have good/decent luck with them, but the 10" depth has me concerned about refusals from cats. Appreciate the input.

What makes you say that? You do know trappers are the ones who advocated for the current dry land body grip regs, right?

Sorry Voltron, I'm still waiting for my cat tag, so I'm not much help with your question.

It seems to me the laws could be better. Like the dog lesh you have to use or the cable restraint there no reason a coyote has to be alive when you get there.

I do believe that could be better too, but it cuts back on catching the neighbors dog and other incidentals. I believe WI was one of the states that first ran studies on cable restraints and how effective they were in not harming the animal, which doesn't help with not being able to run snares.

160’s in a box will do the trick. Make sure the box is see through. I make them 3’ long and a trap on both ends. My opinion is cats will stick their head in if they can see through it.

Good luck. I drew a tag as well!

Really no need for a 220. And most 220s won't qualify for use on dryland in Wisconsin with the 7 1/2" overall dimensions (outside across the humps) unless you have the older square jaw coni.

If you set a snare a caught the neighbor dog your doing something wrong. All trapping area is not in town so the neighbor dog won't be there!.

I didn’t realize that only people who live in town can have dogs can be neighbors.

Me and a few others set up the 220 regs here In WI. It was make those restrictions or lose the use of that 220.

I've caught 100s of coyotes In Crs. And I've caught a few dogs too. Some of those caught dogs were released by their owners and some were released by me.
During the trapping season there are coon hounds coyote hounds and bird dogs all out In the woods.
We are very lucky to be able to use CRs because I doubt that we were ever going to get the use of a lethal snare. I was also evolved In that issue.

If I was going to trap a cat I believe I would be using a CR or a foot hold set. I'm sure you may catch a cat in a one 160 box since the trap can be right In the entrance of the box. But with that 220 recessed I'm not so sure.
The other thing Is you only have one tag and you can't release a cat from a BG trap.Just something to think about.

Thanks Beav. I've had good luck with cats on footholds and CR in the past but won't have another tag until next year hopefully. Just trying to have more options on the line. I might have to make a couple for 220 and 160 and try it out, or just use them for bait boxes without a trap and see how they commit.

I'm glad we can use them at all, better than nothing, same with cable restraints.

Guss, can we call it a neighbor's dog, lol, if the dog came 1 1/2 miles (across ~ 800 acres of ag fields, woodlots, and a creek) just to run/walk through my CR and get itself caught? Dog was sitting there at 4:00 pm waiting for me to release him waging its' tail and then wants me to drive him home when he jumped in the back of the truck. Yes, we call Jake the neighbor's dog. I sure wouldn't have wanted to tell my neighbor his dog was dead, caught and dispatched while in a snare just because of curiosity and running across some line established by humans. And yes, I do believe that domestic animals and pets should be under control of their owners. I also understand that it ain't always going to be so.

I ran a lot of 220 buckets for coon in the heart of cat country never had a cat in that type of set. Did get a nice cat in a hollow log set when setting for coon one time.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

In this area I ran a lot of 220's in boxes both with standard triggers and coni pans also. I have had a few cats check them out but I have never had a cat commit to a box cubby and 220. I have switch to 160's now for Fisher and have had the same action. They come take a look but never commit. I think when I set my bobcat stuff it will be foot holds or snares.

I would hope that my neighbors would have the same opinion.
It's a rural community, everyone knows everyone else. Unlike the cities, we know our neighbors and all pitch in to support each other as we can.
