For those that use beaver floats, do you prefer using a food lure or territorial lure ? Food lure choices ?

I’ve used floats in the spring and have used both and can’t say I saw a real noticeable difference in success. If I was to lean one way it would be towards a curiosity lure. I like John Graham’s Magnolia lure. I also use aspen pieces on my floats

I prefer to use a food lure and popple bait. I want them to approach bait through trap.
I find they often try to climb on the float when I use a Castor lure. Unfortunately that approach is often from any direction. Might be from the back or over the side.

The only time I ever use a beaver float is early spring at ice out on the rivers when the ground/banks are still frozen and you cannot drive a stake.Water goes up and down but the beaver swim upstream in the backeddy along the shores so always approach the float at the open end.Setting a beaver float in current always orients the trap toward the approaching beaver.
The other way I set floats at this time is with the pointy end(baited or lured end) up on the bank and the trap in the water. No problem using castor at these two floatsets.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Never had that problem that I know of. All beaver I've caught have been going into the trap. I put small mud pie on top of tube, and a couple small poplar sticks sometimes. I have sheep wool in the tube to the last outside inch. Then I put lure in tube. If rain does get into the tube the sheepwool holds the scent. I put a few of these some years in fast current road side tubes. I was surprised how well they worked. I weight them with a railroad plate.. I can usually fish everything out from the side of the ditch/stream with my hooked pole and reset with just hip boots or barn boots on.
The fast current spots I set keep the float oriented and maybe accounts for them not climbing the sides. I have seen float designs that fence the sides
