I just picked up some Bridger #2s and recently moved out to southern Utah and am going to take part in their program that offers $50 a coyote scalp/lower jaw. It’s been about 10 years since I last trapped in high school and was wondering if anyone had any tips to pass on that might lead to higher success rates or even general knowledge. (Bait/lure/flat sets/dirt hole sets, etc)

Thanks.

If you go to the archives, it's a treasure chest of information. A couple of days worth of reading.

Now for my little advice, I can put forth. I use three sets and I know at least 3 other guys who do the same. The T bone set, the flat set, and the dirt hole set. Now there may be variations of this that individuals use such as walk through, post, and step down dirtholes. All of them have their place at times and are good ones to learn.

Now for the baits and lures I carry with me for my area, this may work for you or not. I carry a good coyote gland lure, coyote urine, castor based lure, mink gland lure, skunky call lure, and of course my normal predator bait. I use Mountain Man bait and Dakota Prairie bait. My gland lure is scadanaga gland, John Almquist's coyote urine, a homemade beaver lure for my castor, mink master for my mink gland, and John Graham's super bonanza for my call lure. Some people may carry more or less but most of the time this is what I will carry. Now take this with a grain of salt as I'm not a predator trapper.

I use Bridger #2s, duke 550s, and MB 550s. All are great traps. Make sure you have a good tool bag to carry your set making tools.

Welcome to Tman and back to trapping. Just remember location, location, location. Set on sign like scat and prints.
Just start with your basic dirthole and flat sets.
If a location is good for one set. It should get two
Bait, lure and urine seem to be personal choices and somewhat regional at times. Also what works for one guy might not work for the next.
I use waxed dirt because of all our rain/snow/freeze/thaw weather we get.
Here's a mudball wet coyote in these conditions [Linked Image]
