I have caught a few of those Lugnut, but this is first.

That's a better picture for sure a lighter cross fox,not a bass turd fox,congrat's I have two darker full cross fox,caught 4 no slivers and probably 30 to 40 of the bass turd ones,there a pretty fox,you should tan it.Thank's for chiming in Paul about others being caught that far south.

The farther west and north you go, the more common you will find color phase foxes. Those are generally your native American red foxes, not the red foxes introduced from Europe for fox hunting back in the colonial days.

Cascade fox generally run close to 50% either cross, or some gradation of silver/black.

Cross fox semi common on the Seward Peninsula. Probably 5% or more. A few silvers too. Never heard them called anything but a cross fox in Alaska.

Cross fox, silver fox and red fox are all the same species. Just a matter of genetics. You can have two “normal color” red fox produce silver fox pups and cross fox pups. All sorts of color variations.

The “cross” in cross fox has nothing to do with breeding or genes. It refers to the Christian cross coloration on the belly.

If you want to see the wide variation of red fox colors, you should check out the FHA catalog when posted on line with pictures - you would be amazed.
