Do not set near exposed bait. Seems like you should have figured that out. Make sets away from the bait, preferably on trails that target animals make heading to the bait pile. 100 yards/meters away is not too far. You want the birds to freely work the bait. That alerts predators that there is something to investigate.

I agree with the above Your traps are way too close to the bait. And dont set on your walking trail.eagles will land in an open spot like a skidoo trail and hop in on your walking trail.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

When I was a younger man around 8 or 9, I started trapping in North Dakota. While reading the trapping regulations, said you had to place your trap 25 feet or more from any exposed bait greater than 1 pound. I thinks to my young self, how am I supposed to catch anything with the trap 25 feet away? The next day I go out on our property with 3 domestic rabbits and 3 traps with rebar stakes. I drive the stake through the rabbit bedding a trap next to each one spaced out over about 400 yards. Early the next morning after my chores, I run out to check my traps with a flashlight. To my surprise, all 3 traps were full and each one held a Great Horned Owl. Awwwe…. That’s why they wanted the traps placed 25 feet away. Always rememberd that one .

Just move them. If you are targeting canines, make a few dirt hole sets in likely areas, away from the bait. Urine post sets, too. They will check them out. The bait will get them into the area, and with a good Lure, will also find your sets. Snares, (again, away from the bait), can also work well at places they are likely to approach the bait.

Are you catching those magpies in wolf snares? The reason I'm asking, I didn't think a magpie could get caught in a snare. I did catch a few ravens over the years, one in a snare 100 yards away from the bait in thick black spruce. I guess everything is possible. Nope foot traps. I've since moved them.

I caught a magpie several years ago in a 1x19 1/16th coyote snare with a mini death blow lock. It must have landed on the bottom of the loop and the snare closed up from the weight. The magpie was very much alive and I released it. I can tell you it was way harder getting him out of my wool gloves to actually let him go than is was getting him out of the snare. Those little claws are sharp!
I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.
