Loose fitting cotton tshirt. Layers is the ticket to warmth and I like the soft cotton against my skin. Also loose fitting because tight clothing just makes me feel cold

Cotton is rotten
For your socks and tee shirt in cold weather
Cotton a absorbes moisture when you sweat....and stays damp.
You need a wick dry garment next to your skin...to stay dry ..in the cold

I have heard it said that cotton kills..?? How quickly???? I've been wearing it my whole life. If it's no quicker than 75 years I'm not worried. Wife did buy me some polypropylene long underwear last year for Christmas and I only wear it when windchill is below zero if I'm working outside for an extended time. That stuff is warmest long underwear if ever worn.

You need a wick dry garment next to your skin...to stay dry ..in the cold I like a cotton t shirt when it is hot and humid because it gets soaked and wet clothes wick the heat away from your skin. Water also wicks away body heat....wearing clothes soaked from sweat is very similar to being in water.

merino wool blends do a great job and do not stink after being worn multiple days...as far as expense I just purchased 5 known brand merino blend t shirts on ebay for less than $100 total.

Hardly ever truly "cold" down here but my goto is merino wool base when it is 40 or lower
Don't evah take advice from a guy in Texas...on how to stay warm in the Wintah... Only advise on how to stay cool in temps of 105 for weeks on end...

Depends on what I’m doing. If I’m going to the mailbox and back cotton is fine. If you’re outside your house for a little while and can heat back up when you get cold, cotton is fine. If you’re just going deer hunting for a couple of hours, cotton is fine.
If you plan to hike 2-5 miles hunting cotton will kill you. Cotton get damp with sweat and doesn’t dry out once you stop. Poly or wool is what’s needed to survive. Wool can be soaked and still let water evaporate while retaining your body heat. I wear Merano wool socks even during the summer. Why? It keeps my feet cooler and not damp. All my hunting clothes are a type of moisture wicking material to keep me cool during the warmer periods and warm during the cold periods.
Hunting the PNW the last couple of years it might be in the 20’s in the mornings and 70’s by that afternoon. I’d wear a base layer then pants and a jacket. I could ditch the jacket when it warmed up and roll it up and put it in my vest and hunt the rest of the day in the base layer top. Never got cold or hot, and that climbing in elevation and sitting for periods of time. I can promise you, with cotton I would’ve been miserable. My son didn’t listen and by the time he shot his bird and it was time to come off the mountain he had umpteen layers tied around his waste or said the heck with and buried.

40 degrees is t-shirt weather as long as you're working and not sitting around.

Have work a farm outside in winter most of my life and if you dress right with layers you can take some off and never sweat. Never worked an inside job. Feet sweating? Never had that problem so I don't know. I wear cotton socks and Mickey mouse boots most of the time in winter.

To keep warm, polyester or polypropylene. I like the military's ECWCS stuff. Gen III, Levels 1 & 2 are my go-to for outside winter work or hunting. I have some older Gen 2 polypropylene that is really heavy, I don't wear that unless I'll be inactive in sub-freezing weather for extended periods.
To stay cool in warm weather lightweight cotton, long-sleeve, button-down shirts.
Merino wool socks year round, heavier in the winter.

Poly for long johns, It it gets lower than 40 below I will switch to Duo-Fold longies. Cotton layer next to my skin with a wool layer bonded to that. For the upper half I wear a cotton Tee shirt, with a flannel shirt and over that a wool shirt .....maybe . Gotta be at least 20 below before I add the wool shirt You must have Inuit blood! Do they still make Duo-Fold long underwear? They used to be my go-to a long time ago. I believe the made a one-piece union suit also. Liked them so much I earned the moniker Uncle Ubb from my kids (from the Dr. Seuss book Uncle Ubb And His Underwear Too) for wearing them around the house in the evenings.
Eh...wot?

I have heard it said that cotton kills..?? ABSOLUTELY DOES!!!!!! It will absorb water, then freezes next to your skin as soon as you quit exerting yourself, sucking the heat right out of you. PolyPro or Wool next to the skin. Many years ago, be\fore the advent of polypro, Joe Namath got famous wearing pantyhose on the field, so I tried it. Works great! Except it's a real hassle to take a whiz, and if they get a runner in just the right (wrong) place, it will try to strangle or chop off Mr. Winkie! So I went with tight's, not as cheap, but so much better. And let the joshing begin.

If I could afford it a top and bottom made from Alpca. Been using Apaca socks this winter. Feet have not been cold once. Very soft next to the skin.

Polypropylene socks and polypropylene long johns. They need to fit snug. Cotton socks over the poly socks. When I take my boots off, I can ring water out of the cotton socks, take off the poly socks and my feet will be bone dry. Amazing stuff. I can't wear wool. It's like wearing a porcupine hide quill side in.
