What is it and why do you choose that material?

Loose fitting cotton tshirt. Layers is the ticket to warmth and I like the soft cotton against my skin. Also loose fitting because tight clothing just makes me feel cold

polypropylene tight to the skin for me then layers of wool hybrid fabric.

I have heard it said that cotton kills..??

Cotton a absorbes moisture when you sweat....and stays damp.

You need a wick dry garment next to your skin...to stay dry ..in the cold

How quickly???? I've been wearing it my whole life. If it's no quicker than 75 years I'm not worried.
Wife did buy me some polypropylene long underwear last year for Christmas and I only wear it when windchill is below zero if I'm working outside for an extended time. That stuff is warmest long underwear if ever worn.

I like a cotton t shirt when it is hot and humid because it gets soaked and wet clothes wick the heat away from your skin. Water also wicks away body heat....wearing clothes soaked from sweat is very similar to being in water.

WOOL, because it breaths and their is no billed up of sweat.

Tried silk once but I could not concentrate on what I was doing so I gave it up.

while I would like to try wool I can't justify the cost for how well the poly works

I have several sets of these , they dry out very fast even when you sweat them up.

yesterday temps in the 20s went from low 20s in the morning to high 20s later my base layer , a crew neck sweatshirt , overalls . fox river boot socks , and a carhart hooded sweatshirt was out outside most of the day working on firewood.
boots and gloves were un-insulated leather

while I was running the saw and loading in the afternoon I actually had a good sweat going it was too windy to take the outer sweatshirt off but sort of warm with it on.

I was moving the entire time so it wasn't like I was sitting on the deer stand

merino wool blends do a great job and do not stink after being worn multiple days...as far as expense I just purchased 5 known brand merino blend t shirts on ebay for less than $100 total.

Nothing like walking to your ice fishing spot....all lathered up...then sitting there for 4 hours shaking

Hardly ever truly "cold" down here but my goto is merino wool base when it is 40 or lower

Depends on what I’m doing. If I’m going to the mailbox and back cotton is fine. If you’re outside your house for a little while and can heat back up when you get cold, cotton is fine. If you’re just going deer hunting for a couple of hours, cotton is fine.

If you plan to hike 2-5 miles hunting cotton will kill you. Cotton get damp with sweat and doesn’t dry out once you stop. Poly or wool is what’s needed to survive. Wool can be soaked and still let water evaporate while retaining your body heat. I wear Merano wool socks even during the summer. Why? It keeps my feet cooler and not damp. All my hunting clothes are a type of moisture wicking material to keep me cool during the warmer periods and warm during the cold periods.

Hunting the PNW the last couple of years it might be in the 20’s in the mornings and 70’s by that afternoon. I’d wear a base layer then pants and a jacket. I could ditch the jacket when it warmed up and roll it up and put it in my vest and hunt the rest of the day in the base layer top. Never got cold or hot, and that climbing in elevation and sitting for periods of time. I can promise you, with cotton I would’ve been miserable. My son didn’t listen and by the time he shot his bird and it was time to come off the mountain he had umpteen layers tied around his waste or said the heck with and buried.

40 degrees is t-shirt weather as long as you're working and not sitting around.

Some of you guys throw the word die around pretty loosely. Maybe some feel better about themselves if they have the latest and greatest. Yeah cotton may not be the greatest cold weather material but ive done a lot of outdoor activities wearing cotton in cold weather without any real problems. Generally take the cold as good or better than anyone I'm hunting with or working with.
