The line of there habitat here is progressively moving north.
Currently have to go around 20-30 miles north to find them.
I sure wish they would populate again in my area. Seems
Like around hwy 8 in wi is the Line now and it used to be
A hour south of that.

Saw a few in Clark County while deer hunting this year. Used to get them around the Pershing wildlife area when I was young. So I don't know about a line moving north. But then again I don't really look for them anymore. The cousins used to run beagles but that was 20 years ago

As the bush changes so do the animals.
Varying hare do best in the boreal in newer successional forest up to about 25 years regrowth after burns or logging.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

I had them at my place in northern Delaware cty, Catskills, 2,000 ' elevation. They were in one area that was young Hemlocks, they disappeared about when the coyotes took hold...

We still have them up here in areas that have been logged in the last 10 years

I saw plenty of hare sign and a few hares in the Sagola/Amasa area a couple weeks ago. Lots of hares in the cedar swamps in the northern lower peninsula too(Crawford/Oscoda counties). There is always guys running dogs in my deer hunting spots

Sign is still light but I saw more the last Friday and Saturday of gun season in the national forest north of Medford then I have seen in years. One place had considerable sign. We used to see them in southern Clark CO when I was going to HS in Jackson CO in the 60s. I have seen some cottontails in the national forest. Few but some. Do they move hares out like whitetail do with mule deer? Or red squirrels do to greys or greys do to foxtails?
During the 80s several of us would do a couple January weekends in the national forest and hunt the snowshoes, with snowshoes. Slow going in many places.

We used to have quite a few when I had my hunting land in northern MN. Used to see them in the alder swamps on our land. But, the wolves have wiped them out. The guys who I sold the land to said they haven't seen any snow shoes in years.
