There are several reasons why hydraulics for this application are not a good idea.

First of which is that I would have to run a pump of that engine and have less power to drive the actual saw. For the lifting it is not precise enough and I would have to add some sort of lock to hold the saw head still while cutting. Hydraulics need the power as they are being used. Unlike electrical power that is used from the batterie and charged as long as the engine is running , even when not cutting. Cost is another factor as I would need spool valves hoses and pump and hydraulic motor for the carriage more bearings and belts etc.

Looks good, I had a woodmizer and cut a lot of wood with it. You might add a water tank with a hose and an outlet right where the blade enters the log. That little bit of water helps a lot on blade life. If you drag logs, I recommend if they get muddy or dirty that you power wash them before cutting. Dirt packed in the bark will dull your blade in a second. You will spend as much time sharpening blades as you do cutting lumber.

I think you will need blade guide rollers because of the force the log puts on the blade trying to push back against it. The woodmizer had one side that was adjustable so you could move it in and out depending on the size of the log. That is where the water outlet was. You want the blade guide as close as you can to the log.

That was the part about almost done. I did mention the water and guides above. Its what I am working on at the moment. Just letting the welds cool off as I am typing. Burnt my fingers more than once during this build
The fuel tank from the old ATV is going to be the water tank on the saw and i'll just use a portable boat fuel tank for the engine fuel.
I turned the guide rollers out of an old boat prop shaft and they run on a couple of ball bearings each. I think I posted a Tube video on my chanel about making them.
When I go to the scrap place the missus always tells me not to come back with more stuff than I take there

I mulled thing over this morning and came to the conclusion that you can build one of these even if ya can't weld. You could make all those joints with sturdy angle bolted to the box sections with rivet nuts etc. It would take a little longer and involve a lot of drilling etc. But it would sure work. As I said before, I am lazy so I welded things together that do not have to come apart or need to be adjusted in time. But what I am saying is that anyone can build one of these and other things if ya just sit down a minute and think about it. I have about 800 bucks in this thing for materials that I had to buy ..... the rest id re purposed stuff. From a floating dock, a boat trailer, a old 6x6 ATV a boat prop shaft ... the " dash " with the switches and relays is a 30 cal ammo box.
I don't know if " Mechano sets" were ever a thing on this side of the pond. But think of it as metal LEGO. where you get to build stuff out of little strips and able of metal with small nuts and bolts. I has a bunch of that stuff as a kid. Now as a semi adult, I few the whole world as a large size mechanic set. So if ya put yer mind to it, there is almost nothing that ya can't fix or if it cant me fixed .. make it new. All of my tools are in a 8x19 foot enclosed trailer including the work benches. Even my hand loading stuff has room in there. So ya don't need a big shop either as an excuse not to make what you want.
Using this saw mill as an example. As a whole it may look daunting for someone to build it. But its just like eating an elephant ..... you do a little bit at a time. Divide the job up into smaller and smaller components and concentrate on each component ... then it all comes together a bit at a time. I did not make a single drawing for this thing and just " made it up " as i went along. Its part of the big elephant of building a house by myself with the materials that grow on my property. For that house I need lumber. So I need to build a machine to make that lumber.
