North Central SD is fogged in this morning. Great morning to hunt pheasants and celebrate a late Christmas with my mom. [Linked Image]

Bucket list hunt. Would like to hunt that country for pheasants. The only pheasant hunt I have been on is bird farms in this area.

That lab will be 2 in March she’s turning into a hunting machine. Which is great because she’s replacing an absolute great dog. It’s been a great year for birds so far. This snow and ice storm has them bunched up hopefully the ice melts in the next day or two so they can get to feed easier. We’ll see what we find tomorrow

I have a new female lab the same age as yours. She is a good hunter and a great retriever. She has several times found birds we didn't kill and brought them to me plus one of my own that glided 300 yards before expiring.

My older lab is an absolute beast when it comes to hunting. He hunts himself bloody every time were out. The new female does not hunt as hard as him, most dogs don't. She has already earned herself the nickname Prima Donna by constantly coming out of the cover to pull cockleburs and other weed seeds out of her fur instead of hanging tough with her partner.

I'm hoping she steps up her game before the old male retires.

Eh...wot?

Backroadarcher I am not a big fan of going to the pheasant farms /regulated hunting grounds to hunt pheasants But if you have dogs and you just like hunting with a dog you do what it takes to put your dogs together with some birds and make the best of it Hunting wild birds is a completely different thing as compared to hunting pen raised pheasants Wild birds are faster stronger flyers and run as likely as fly Other tricks wild birds use are to just sit tight and /or let you walk by or flush after you are past them Plus they are much more wary in their natural setting lf you are able to hunt wild birds and get a few most times out you have shown yourself to be an experienced bird hunter And even now I consider it to be a trophy to bag two birds on a hunt for strictly wild birds And while it is not as much fun as hunting with dogs is I have 2 Boykin Spaniels They are not a common breed of dog you might find in the fields of PA They are flushing dogs and also great retrievers And at about40lbs make execellent housedog And they are eager to please and smart Bird hunting becamr uch more fun whenhey became part of th hunt . There are some that just get some people together and walk the fields with some knowledge of where the local populations is normally found it is possible to kill birds that way also But for me a dog or two a few friends and hopefully one or two young hunters just learning the fun that hunting pheasants can be I will always think of pheasant hunting as something worth doing And gong is better than not going For me it was a step from being a kid towards becoming an adult

I’ve hunted some of the best places for pheasants my whole life. Never shot a pen raised pheasant in my life. Been very fortunate to grow up and life in a great place.

If you can make that statement than indeed you are a blessed man PA was called the Pheasant Capital of the east coast during the 60's and 70's . Opening day was an event as big as any first day of buck season Families got together And it was even looked forward to as much as Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays In order to allow the farmers time to take care of the morning chores starting time was 9:00 am At that time normal starting time was 7:00 AM You did not need a watch to Know WHEN 9 ARRIVED Shooting WAS MOSTLY NON STOP FOR THE FIRST FEW HOURS As a 12year old it as a much fun a I ever had And tt continued that way until the early 80's I loved hunting birds and it was not taken for granted by me or any of those I hunted with So to know that you have something that is to value as an important part of your life An try to pass the opportunity to hunt pheasants to the younger generation It will be a very worth while accomplishment

I lived near the Berks County Prison back in those days West Side. They'd blare the escape siren at 9:00 AM opening day of small game so all the hunters for miles around would know it was starting time.

Eh...wot?

Same here in central Iowa. Plenty of wild birds to chase and I am grateful for it.
