I'm of the opinion that baited or passive trail cameras can be very helpful in figuring out what's around. Tracking, especially with snow on the ground, is helpful, but so much more interesting details with the cameras. I use the Reconyx HC600 Hyperfire H. D. Covert IR Cameras, but they are expensive. However, I've had no problems in 4 years of use. I have documented 18 species on "film".

Mountain Lions are relatively easy to get in to baits. This one was in my yard.

Coyotes are a common trail cam subject.

Even down in the sagebrush, I commonly get marten on film.

This is a neat Red Fox with Deer Mouse eyes blinking from out of the cover.

Wolves are probably the spookiest. Often times they'll wait two weeks before they are satisfied that all is okay. Magpies are common, and are usually the first critters to show up.

With the wolves, I see some interesting behavior.

Golden eagles often fight over the bait.

I know less about lions than anyone on the planet probably but that looks like a big tom that hasn't missed many meals. Nice pics.

Sharon - None of your beautiful art work??

martentrapper - Yes, we do set a few sets in the sagebrush. Since I got down here in 2008, we've caught 120 sagebrush marten ( only an average of 8 marten per year). Only one was an adult female. Obviously, they are dispersers from the continental divide, where there is some decent marten habitat.

Here’s one , Jack, that cams capture often …I finally thought of one …that hopefully goes ok with your nice shots.

Gulo Nice pictures as usual The use of trail camera certainly adds to the ability of anyone so inclined to open up a more aceturate view of the wildlife area in the area you are setting your cameras While I have no facts to back this up I think the trail camera has made a huge impact on the scientific study of the natural world
