Anyone use one the cone splitter for splitting wood. Got a friend building one on a small trailer run by a gas engine. I see you can but the cone for a power drill also. How do they work versus a wedge splitter? Watch the video.

I have a couple like this one. They work okay but my big wedges work better on the tough stuff. Hand splitting only.

Buddy had one mounted on his tractor PTO it had an added bar to keep it from getting out of control kind of lay the piece on the bar then slide it into the cone way safer that way. Notice I the video that pallet move some from the log pushing it. The PTO being higher needed a bar to control the torque. I might have that same cone in the video I bought off of EBay and never used I was going to put it on a Ford Ranger 4 cyl driveline but never did.

Just be careful it takes a lot of torque to power those things.

the best cone splitter I have seen was mounted on a skid loader and you sat safely in the cab while using it and you ran it forward or backward with the stick controls , it was intended for very large rounds to make them manageable pieces it was at a farm show and I am not sure if anyone bought one
the under over type hydraulic still seemed like the better option

a hydraulic ram wedge splitter you have time and ability to move and back up the wedge you control everything

with the cone you can end up with your round swinging around and becoming a projectile , not a real good way to shut it down fast it is going to swing around a while

more likely to need to choose rounds without big knots

if you have to be that concerned with the safety of it , you have to select your would carefully it just doesn't seem worth it

with my hydraulic I had the kids splitting about 9 years old , I wouldn't want a 15 year old any where near a cone running off a axel.
and that right there is going to cut into the years of work you can get out of your kids it is already far too short.

The guy I know who lives up on the mountain off grid that is building one, has a gear box. A 4 or 5 hp gas engine. He has a friend that built one like he is building, say it works like a champ.

How do those cones you buy work using it with a power drill?

There is a reason they put so much machine guarding on equipment in industry. That looks like a very good way to end up crippled or dead. Those pieces were small enough a few smales with a maul would gave split them and would be much faster and safer.

Basically no thanks. Way to easy for a shirt sleeve, tail, or hair or beard to get caught on that and pull you in.

Working in close proximity to one of those powered by a PTO or engine and drive train. Just seems like an excellent way to get hurt VERY badly. Most guys in farm country know of at least one person that has been mauled or killed by a PTO

I tried the wood grenade cone almost a diamond cone for splitting wood , prefer regular wedges also

my wife was pounding on the wood grenade when it flew out and nailed her in the leg.

regular wedge if there isn't a crack cut a notch with the chain saw and drive it in have a few wedges to keep working it open
but honestly I noodle most of that really big stuff now put the round on it'd side and let the noodles fly it is so much less work and and typically do it in the woods to make nice loadable pieces.

if you noodle about 2/3 of the way through you can give it a whack with the maul and break it , helps keep your chain out of the dirt and clutch cover from loading up with noodles when you run into your pile.

A lot of the easy to split tools they show are not splitting anything tough to split wood wise.

looks very dangerous to me also. I would never do what those clowns are doing there. A small gas powered one that is geared down would be fine.

I still split mine the old fashion way. I don't heat with wood as a primary heat course. I would imagine as I age a splitter maybe more appealing.

I like a diamond wedge best ...don't have a photo of it as it's in a bucket out in a shed

I wouldn't want that car splitter

My outdoor burner eliminates a lot of the need for splitting. 2'x2' door 47' deep and 36" wide fire box eats big pieces. I split the big stuff so we can Handel it . If it won't split easy I just cut it thin 6 to 10 inches thick then it will split easy or may be able to be burnt without splitting it.

looks like a well built and powerful splitter.

did you see the ones with a big flywheel and a wedge that comes around about every 2 seconds grab a piece of wood and line it up then shove it in
this is the least dangerous looking of this variety as it is moving much slower than most of them I have seen

[video:youtube]https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Bby_k9FpD6Y?feature=share[/video]
but also gets the with a 4 way wedge this would go very fast with a hydraulic splitter it is very easy to split wood
the issue is always when you get to a 3-4 way intersection of large limbs at the trunk I suppose you cut that burnable size slabs with the chain saw.

I would have a hard time believing that those cone splitters are still being sold; Those look WAY more dangerous than Lawn-Darts.
