So I just noticed something troubling tonight, I have around 15 tanned marten furs hanging on my wall above a shelf, I just noticed tonight a bunch of long hairs on the shelf below them and look to be tail hairs. Have you seen this before? What’s happening? Should I be concerned about the rest of the hair falling out?

Could be you have moths in the pelts. Moths love tanned fur. Shake a couple of pelts and see if any adult moths fly out or if any larvae fall out.

I would put all the pelts in a freezer for a week to kill what ever might be living in the pelts.

How long have you had them and were they home tanned or commercially tanned?

Freezer store them for a month & then spray them with a pesticide.

Otherwise, it sounds like those pelts are
well on their way to becoming bug dust !!! frown

Commercial tanned, not all by the same place, some were from a taxidermist, some from USA Fox and fur.

The oldest ones are from 2018

What spray would you recommend? I have deer, marten and weasel mounts in the same room, should I spray those as well?

permethrin or RAID will work for most any kind of bug or insect.

I'd hit your furs & mounts with both.

I'd wear gloves & respirator & do it outdoors
in well ventilated areas & keep kids & pets away
while doing it.

Let them sit out in a shed or garage for a spell.

You might try those chemical sprays on a piece of scrap fur before you use it on your pelts or mounts. I would be concerned about what reaction they might have.

Note - I’m not saying there will be a bad reaction, just urging you to be cautious.

may times your marten season was opened early and the tail is the last place to prime up
could be those specimens
clothes moths are your worst pest
Take everything that is organic, ie fur-wool and put into a fumigation chamber type and moth ball it for 2-3 weeks
then when bringing out expose to UV sunlight for a day
avoid the fumes
wissmiss advise on the spray is that the petro chemicals are not fur friendly

clothes moths have to be frozen many times as the larvae have some distinct anti-freezing methods and still survive

For future reference USA Fox doesn’t tan anything. They just send it to a tannery and serving as the middle man just mark it up. Best just to avoid them and send it directly to a tannery.
