Ours is sauerkraut and pork. This year we're also having ham and black eyed peas to cover all the bases.

Nowdays whatever sounds good. Everyday we eat what we want... Same as xmas we buy what
we want always so xmas is only to celebrate jesus really for us. Sal did get additional savings in his xmas stocking.

Beans/peas, some part of a pig, fried cabbage, and cornbread.

Leftovers from last night: mushroom pie, meatballs, bacon wrapped shrimp, bread roll, deviled eggs, fresh fruit platter and little sausages in BBQ sauce. Too much college football to watch to fuss with a big meal.

I put some bacon grease in the bottom of the crockpot. Added a pound of blackeyed peas. About a pound and a half of cubed ham pieces. Some chopped up celery and onions. A chopped up head of cabbage. A quart of chicken broth and about two big tablespoons of Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning. Turned it on about 3 1/2 hours ago. Smells delicious.

Going to bake a skillet of cornbread later. Blood sugar will just have to spike a bit. I dont think 2-3 times a year will kill me.

What's the significance of the black eyed peas?

I like to save a couple of my best ducks from the Fall hunt, all plucked and nice. My favorites for New Years Day are Canvasbacks. Wife roasts them breast down in apple cider so they stay really nice and moist. Serve them u[ with wild rice and duck gravy with a good dry red wine. I think it's a good way to start out a new year.

Didn't get to hunt much this year so will come up with something else.

Prime rib, cheezy potatoes, green bean casserole, onion wraps and a lot of other sides. Oh and beer or wine. Maybe a gin and tonic but definitely champagne at midnight.

I like to think of it as a simple meal of inexpensive foods to remember your roots and the basics that got you here and will carry you forward.

Hadn't really thought about it yet. We will start with bacon, eggs and fried taters for breakfast and cross the dinner bridge later. Still processing lobster and crab legs from last night.

I've always heard that the black eyed peas and hog jowl tradition came from the south right after the Civil War. One was considered lucky to have peas to eat and dang lucky if he had pork with it. Hence the tradition of eating black eyed peas and hog jowl was supposed to bring one good luck in the coming year.

Never anything specific here but dad has always had pickled herring on new years. Supposed to bring good luck in the new year or something like that. I tried it once and almost spit it out. Rather have bad luck lol
