I’ve had Leer caps in the past and the last 3 have been ARE without issue. It might be the nature of the beast based on the new truck designs but it sucks. Freezes shut based on the large flare over the tailgate- not a fan.

Can you spray silicone under that overhang and wax the tailgate?

A cap on a truck just makes It to hard to work out of. So I don't have one on my truck.

Tried light silicone on a cloth- haven’t tried wax. Same side window issue- I went with fixed side widows on this one and now the fixed rear door that wasn’t an option sick

Wipe something like Armorall or 303 protectant on the seal. Probably have to reapply once a month during freezing weather.

We have a freezer container that doesn't have a door defroster.. I liberally spray the gaskets and door frame with silicone and that usually lasts about a month. Otherwise you need to pry the door open with a lever.

It's worth a try! Hadn't thought of this.

About a month is right- I always put my keys on the truck cap back rail- because I don’t trust keyless entry, albeit convenient. I came out of the woods after bow hunting- couldn’t open the back, no big deal, drive back to the cabin and thaw it out in the heated garage- nope … key was far enough from ignition that it wouldn’t recognize it. I pounded gently and then not so gently to open it and wiped it with silicone then.

And why I have never had one. BUT. With my truck being single cab old ranger with little room and my traveling for work it crossed my mind.

Then I get to a bee yard 15 miles from home see they are ready to swarm and I don't have what I need in the truck to take care of it and I don't have time to drive home get it get back and leave for work on time. That cost me a swarm. Had I had a topper I would just leave some of everything in the truck all bee season. Having to put it in and out leads to me getting lazy and leaving some things behind.

That swarm leaving vs me pulling the queen and a fram of brood cost Me all the honey production last year from that hive. So 60 to 80 lb x $16 per lb . Going buy what I got out of the other hive at that location.

So it's something I always thought made a truck useless but now I see a benefit especially if it's quick and easy to take off in the winter

I know everyone has very different needs from the equipment they buy I got a Diamond back bed cover a few years ago They ae the new guys on the block when it comes to bed covers They are rock solid very simple to put on or take off Hae allow access to the whole bed of your truck without needing to climb over things And because the design and material used to make them they are able to haul a quad on top of the access doors open so you can reach any area of the bed By figuring out a lay out of how you put your gear in the bed attach baskets or bins for even more storage I WISH I WOULD HAVE HAD ONE 20 YEAS AGO .II sure would have made running a trapline a lot more fun and lot less work.

toppers sure are nice for keeping all the tools and stuff in there

and all that stuff is in the way when you need to haul a bunch of stuff

I have my little garden truck for hauling wood or the trailer

while I would love to have the 8 foot work bed with tool boxes on both sides those get rather expensive

with my older trucks having keys cut is easy

but these chipped keys and the like are made for a way I don't operate

I am probably going back to a van on my next vehicle

I don't keep one on my personal truck, but it is an absolute necessity on my work truck.

a quad cab with tool boxes that fit in the entire back seat and have a indoor outdoor carpet on them for the dogs to sit on top of

I could work with that level of tool storage and dog space then have an open bed

if ya gotta have a topper might as well buy a van, more room inside by a long shot.

Put one on my truck about 15 years ago. I was making a lot of out of state trips and wanted something to keep everything dry and out of the weather, including the dog. It does have hinderance at times, but I added a hitch haul for critters. I could probably increase my gas mileage if I ever cleaned out the back. I think I have a little bit of everything back there.

I hate shoveling snow out of a truck bed and knocking ice off tools. I have had a leer contractors cap for the last 3 trucks. Love them except for the price on the last one,but i only need one every ten years. This may be my last one.
